If mesothelioma is found doctors may recommend the procedure of a biopsy to make an accurate diagnosis. A biopsy is the removal of tiny pieces of tissue that is examined. This procedure can reveal if the mesothelioma is epithelioid (epidermoid), Sarcomatoid (sarcomatoid) or biphasic.

If mesothelioma has reached an early stage, doctors can remove all the tumors and provide the best treatment. The specialist can also determine if the cancer has expanded to the abdomen. They may then recommend palliative treatment for the patient, including paracentesis to drain the fluid from the abdomen.

The odds of survival are worse when a mesothelioma has progressed. The reason for this is that the tumors may become resistant to certain treatments and can recur. The doctor may recommend a combination of surgery and chemotherapy. Surgery options include cytoreduction along with hyperthermic intraperitoneal therapy. This combination is more likely to improve the prognosis of a patient than merely chemotherapy alone.
