Both the Q5 as well as the Q7 Max Series get very good scores in our bare floor tests and are particularly effective in cleaning pet hair. There are some issues, however, that prevent them from being our first choice. One of the flaws of the Q5 is that its navigation system doesn't have AI-powered obstacles avoidance. It's therefore prone to getting stuck on shoes and socks and could not navigate rooms with lots of people well in our tests. It also doesn't have a camera that would let it see the corners of an area.

It's still a good robot vacuum deal for those whose home or office has lots of unfinished flooring and you're looking to save some money. It's also quiet and works when you're at work or at school. It's not equipped with the edge-to-edge floor vacuuming that is offered by the more expensive iRobot Roomba X30. It's also less effective when it comes to mopping. It relies on disposable wet wipes that don't adhere very well and cannot handle dried-on debris. The Q5 is self-emptying cradle however. This is a feature we haven't seen on other robot vacuum/mop combination.

3. Roomba X40 from iRobot

With an elegant circular design that appears more like a normal Roomba rather than the boxy units This mop and robot vacuum is among the most appealing looking in our reviews. iRobot's latest flagship model also happens to be its smartest, with advanced features including Enhanced Dirt Detection Technology as well as future compatibility with Matter (another company's robot that is able to wash mop pads).

It's the only robotic mop or vacuum that has a perfect 10 in our testing due to a mix of high-tech sensors, which include a camera, structured light system, and multiple lasers. The X40 Ultra was the only robot we tested that could fill and empty its basestation in a self-contained manner. It also boasted a suction of 12,000Pa as well as self-cleaning mop mops.

The L20 Ultra is a top-of-the-range robot vacuum and mop, with a variety of sophisticated features to help you get rid of your chores. Like Ecovacs range-topping X2 Omni and Roborock's S8 Pro Ultra, the L20 is designed to be a hands-free cleaning machine that takes charge of both mopping and vacuuming. It comes with a multifunction dock that automatically empties the vacuum's dust bin, fills its water tank, and washes and dries its mop pads.

The smart robot uses LIDAR and structured lighting to draw out floorplans and identify obstacles. It navigates more intelligently than its top competitors. It also comes with a front-mounted camera for real-time hazards detection but this wasn't 100% reliable in our tests and could be confused with power cords or obstructions.

The vacuum has a maximum suction of 7,000 Pascals, which is more than enough to complete the task. It also has "Intelligent Dirt Detection", that regulates the amount of time the vacuum works and adjusts the frequency of cleaning for different areas of the home in accordance with the amount of dirt they tend to be.

For larger homes it's recommended to choose a model with spot or zone cleaning modes that allow you to instruct the robot to clean a particular area of your house via the app or voice controls. A stairway mode is useful if you own a lot furniture. Also the recharge and resume feature that allows your robot vacuum to continue where it left off is great for busy families.

iRobot RX3

The RX3 is a cleaner with more intelligence than you'd imagine from its price. It is a great job vacuuming, removing 55% of debris in our tests (it was second only to the Roomba Q5 Pro). It also mops with a single pad that uses a reciprocating motion, which does a better job cleaning than the other mop cleaners for robots we've examined. It's also extremely self-sufficient, with a full-featured app and a self emptying base that can be washed.

The iRobot application is designed to guide you through an exercise in mapping which collects information about your floorplan and any "no go" areas that you've marked on the map. It can be used to make cleaning schedules, plan a spot clean or to sort out your rooms with the most dirt to improve performance. The app also grants access to many features, such as seasonal suggestions, custom maps, and advanced settings for your cleaning.

Its shape is more rectangular than most other robot vacuums, meaning it can reach corners and underneath furniture more easily.
