John Collison (born August 6, 1990) is an Irish billionaire entrepreneur and the co-founder and president of Stripe, a global technology company that builds financial infrastructure for the internet. In 2016, at age 26, he became the world's youngest self-made billionaire, a record he held until 2019.

Together with his older brother Patrick Collison, John built Stripe from a Y Combinator startup into one of the world's most valuable private companies, with a valuation of $91.5 billion as of February 2025 and annual payment volume exceeding $1.4 trillion.

The Collison brothers' journey from rural Ireland to the heights of Silicon Valley has made them icons of the technology startup world, credited with fundamentally simplifying how businesses accept payments online.

Early life and education

John Collison was born on August 6, 1990, in Dromineer, a small village in County Tipperary, Ireland. His parents, Denis and Lily Collison, ran a lakeside hotel. Denis was an electronic engineer who worked for Dell, while Lily was a microbiologist and later became an author. The entrepreneurial atmosphere of his childhood home left a lasting impression.

The Collison family moved several times during John's childhood before settling in Dromineer. Growing up in rural Ireland, far from major technology centers, John and his older brother Patrick taught themselves programming and began building software projects.

John attended Castletroy College, a secondary school in Limerick. In 2009, he sat for the Irish Leaving Certificate examination, achieving eight A1 and two A2 grades - among the highest scores ever recorded in the exam.

Following his secondary school success, John enrolled at Harvard University in the fall of 2009. However, he would not complete his degree, dropping out to focus on building Stripe.

Career

Auctomatic

John's entrepreneurial career began remarkably early. In 2007, at just 17 years old, he and his brother Patrick co-founded Shuppa, an online marketplace. The venture evolved into Auctomatic, a software company that built tools to help eBay sellers manage their auctions more efficiently.

The brothers applied to Y Combinator, the influential Silicon Valley startup accelerator, and were accepted. Notably, Enterprise Ireland, the government agency supporting Irish business, declined to fund the company, prompting the brothers to relocate to California.

On Good Friday 2008, when John was just 17 and Patrick was 19, they sold Auctomatic to Canadian company Live Current Media for $5 million. Both brothers became millionaires before entering college.

Founding Stripe

Even before selling Auctomatic, the Collison brothers had begun contemplating the difficulties of accepting payments online. As developers themselves, they had experienced firsthand how complicated existing payment systems were - requiring days or weeks of integration work, complex paperwork, and ongoing maintenance.

In 2010, Patrick and John both dropped out of their respective universities (Patrick from MIT, John from Harvard) to pursue their new idea. With seed funding from Y Combinator, they launched Stripe in San Francisco.

The company's core innovation was a set of simple APIs (Application Programming Interfaces) that allowed developers to integrate payments into websites and apps with just a few lines of code. What previously required weeks of work could be accomplished in minutes.

Rapid Growth

Stripe's developer-friendly approach quickly attracted major customers including Amazon, Shopify, Lyft, and countless startups. The company's early investors included Peter Thiel, Elon Musk, and Sequoia Capital - validation from some of Silicon Valley's most discerning backers.

As president, John focuses on Stripe's business operations, including sales, user operations, and risk management, while Patrick serves as CEO and concentrates on product and engineering.

By 2016, Stripe's valuation reached $9.2 billion, making 26-year-old John the youngest self-made billionaire in history.

Stripe Today

Stripe has grown into one of the world's most valuable private technology companies. Key milestones include:

  • 2016: Achieved $9.2 billion valuation
  • 2021: Peak valuation of $95 billion during the fintech boom
  • 2023: Valuation declined to $50 billion amid market corrections; company raised $6.5 billion
  • 2024: Processed $1.4 trillion in payment volume; profitable for first time
  • 2025: Valuation rose to $91.5 billion following a tender offer

Stripe now serves millions of businesses in more than 120 countries, providing not just payment processing but also billing, invoicing, fraud prevention, and financial services infrastructure.

Personal life

Relationship

John Collison is reportedly engaged to Laura Behrens Wu, a German entrepreneur who co-founded Shippo, a shipping platform for e-commerce businesses, in 2013. While the couple maintains privacy about their relationship, they follow each other on social media and occasionally engage with each other's posts.

Laura Behrens Wu built Shippo into a significant logistics technology company, making the couple a rare pairing of two successful tech founders.

Family

John's older brother Patrick Collison serves as Stripe's CEO. In April 2022, Patrick married Swiss-American biochemist Silvana Konermann, whom he met in 2004 at the EU Young Scientist competition in Moscow when they were both teenagers.

His younger brother Tommy Collison is a writer and serves as head of communications at Retool, a software development company. Tommy was diagnosed with cerebral palsy as an infant and underwent successful surgery as a child. All three brothers now live in San Francisco.

John's mother, Lily Collison, became an author and wrote a book about raising entrepreneurial children.

Personal Interests

Collison is a licensed pilot and an accomplished pianist. He maintains an interest in urban development and architecture.

Irish Properties

Despite living in San Francisco, Collison has maintained strong ties to Ireland. In 2021 and 2022, he purchased the Abbeyleix Estate and the neighboring derelict Millbrook House, both in County Laois, Ireland. He has announced plans to spend several million euros over multiple years restoring Millbrook House as a family home.

Controversies

Forbes Limerick Article

In April 2021, Forbes published a profile of the Collison brothers that portrayed their home city of Limerick as a "warzone" and Europe's "murder capital." The characterization drew immediate backlash in Ireland.

Patrick Collison tweeted: "Not only mistaken about Limerick but the idea of 'overcoming' anything is crazy. We are who we are because we grew up where we did." John described the article as "daft."

Irish politicians demanded an apology from Forbes. Patrick O'Donovan called on the magazine "to apologise to the people of Limerick for the insult and hurt caused." Forbes removed the article from its website on April 9, 2021.

The incident highlighted the brothers' protective attitude toward their Irish roots and their rejection of narratives portraying their success as an escape from disadvantage.

Stripe Layoffs

In November 2022, Stripe announced layoffs affecting approximately 14% of its workforce (about 1,100 employees) as the company responded to slowing growth in the fintech sector. Patrick Collison's memo to employees acknowledging leadership's responsibility for over-hiring was praised for its candor, though the cuts still generated criticism of the company's growth management.
