A biopsy involves the removal of tiny pieces of tissue that is examined. This test will reveal whether the mesothelioma has epithelioid (epidermoid) or Sarcomatoid (sarcomatoid) or biphasic.

If mesothelioma has not spread, doctors can remove the tumors. They will also offer an option for curative treatment. The doctor can also determine if the cancer has spread to the abdomen. They may then recommend palliative treatments for the patient, such as paracentesis to drain the fluid from the abdomen.

If mesothelioma progresses the chances of survival are less. The tumors could become resistant to certain treatments and may recur. The specialist may suggest a combination of chemotherapy and surgery. Surgery options include cytoreduction combined with hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy. This combination is more likely than chemotherapy on its own to improve the prognosis of the patient.
