Upgrades can boost the value of weapons, armors and rings. Upgrades also increase bonuses such as Crit chance and damage from PvE.

The cost of upgrading an item is determined by the item's level. The cost increases as the item's level rises.

Components

Upgrade components can be added to trinkets, armor, and weapons to provide them with a boost in stats or add a bonus effect. These can be obtained by crafting, buying from vendors or trading with other players, or looting. Some upgrades can also be accompanied by special cosmetic effects.

Upgrade components can be inserted into equipment that has a slot to accommodate them; the item must be at least upgraded to the blue level to allow a component to be used. Upgrade components, unlike other mods, can only be applied only once. They cannot be replaced or applied multiple times. Infusions and Enrichments are a kind of upgrade component that can be used to upgrade non-amulet legendary and ascended equipment, as well in some items that aren't ascended. Leveling

The item upgrade system allows players to boost the power of certain items by introducing upgraded components. This is referred to as "upping".
