If mesothelioma has reached an early stage, doctors can remove all of the tumors and provide an effective treatment. The doctor will also be able to determine if the cancer has been able to spread to the abdomen. They can then prescribe palliative care for the patient. If mesothelioma progresses and the prognosis is less favorable, it becomes more difficult to treat. This is because the cancer may become resistant to certain treatments and can recur. The doctor may recommend a combination of surgery and chemotherapy. Surgery options include cytoreduction with hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemo. This combination is more likely than chemotherapy on its own to improve the prognosis of the patient.
