Exposure to asbestos often starts with work in construction or manufacturing. These industries may employ materials that contain asbestos, such as insulation and fireproofing. Asbestos can also be found in household products, such as flooring and roofing tiles. Even low levels of exposure can put someone at risk for mesothelioma. Because mesothelioma has an extended latency period it is possible for patients to be diagnosed with peritoneal cancer decades after the initial exposure.

Peritoneal Mesothelioma can mimic other conditions. It is often mistaken for hernias, gastrointestinal problems like Crohn's or colitis, and other types of abdominal cancer. Many patients do not report their asbestos exposure and don't seek medical care. Doctors may suggest a biopsy to confirm the diagnosis of mesothelioma. A biopsy involves removing only a small amount of affected tissue for testing. This test can determine whether the mesothelioma has epithelioid (epidermoid) or Sarcomatoid (sarcomatoid) or biphasic.

If mesothelioma has reached an early stage, doctors can remove all the tumors and provide the best treatment. The specialist can also determine if the cancer has expanded to the abdomen. They may then recommend palliative care for the patient. For example paracentesis, which is a procedure to drain the abdomen of fluid.

If a mesothelioma has advanced, the prognosis becomes poorer. This is because the tumors can become resistant to certain treatments and can recur. The doctor might suggest a combination of chemotherapy and surgery. Surgery options include cytoreduction with hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy. This combination is more likely to improve a patient's outlook than merely chemotherapy alone.
