A biopsy involves the removal of the smallest piece of tissue to be examined. This procedure can reveal the stage of mesothelioma and if it is epithelioid, biphasic, or sarcomatoid.

If mesothelioma has reached an early stage, doctors can remove all of the tumors and provide curative treatment. The doctor will also be able to determine whether the cancer has spread within the abdomen. They can then prescribe palliative care for the patient, for example paracentesis to drain the abdominal fluid.

The prognosis is worsened when a mesothelioma has progressed. This is because the cancer can become resistant to certain treatments and may recur. The doctor might recommend the combination of chemotherapy and surgery. Surgery options include cytoreduction with hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy. This combination is more likely than chemotherapy alone to improve the outlook of the patient.
