If mesothelioma does not have spread, doctors can remove the tumors. They will also offer a curative treatment. The specialist can also determine whether the cancer has been able to spread to the abdomen. They can then prescribe palliative treatments for the patient, such as paracentesis, which drains the fluid from the abdomen.

If mesothelioma progresses the chances of survival are less. The tumors may become resistant to certain treatments and recur. The doctor may suggest the combination of surgery and chemotherapy. Surgery options include cytoreduction with hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy. This combination is more likely to improve a patient's outlook than merely chemotherapy alone.
