Upgrades can increase the value of armors, weapons and rings. Upgrades also increase bonuses such as Crit chance and damage from PvE.

Components

Upgrade components are items that can be inserted into weapons, armor, and trinkets to give an additional stat boost or effect while they're in use. They can be acquired through crafting, purchasing from vendors, trading or looting. Some upgrades can also be accompanied by special cosmetic effects.

Upgrade components can only be applied to equipment with a slot. The item must be upgraded to blue level before the component can be applied. Upgrade components, unlike other mods can only be applied once. They are not able to be replaced or applied several times. Infusions and enrichments are a particular kind of upgrade component that is used to upgrade non-amulet ascended or legendary equipment and some of the non-ascended back items. Infusions and Enrichments can be obtained by salvaging equipment from the ascended state or completing a quest in the Prophecies, Factions, and Nightfall campaigns.

An upgrade can have a prefix or suffix, modifying the name of the item to the upgrade (for instance "Canthan Armor Insignia is changed to Canthan Armor of Minor Vigor). Some upgrades increase the Mark Level or Rarity of an item, allowing players to create stronger versions of the item using fewer upgrade crystals than they need to reach the same level with normal methods.

A boost upgrade can change the attack or defence attributes of a weapon, or armor. These upgrades are available to be made from the Portative Forging Station once the player has completed the cutscene, and defeats the Crazed Mechanical. These upgrades can be purchased by purchasing them from the cash shop or by obtaining them from enemies when upgrading other equipment.

Each upgrade increases the probability that a higher tier version of the item will be revealed in the next reset. This gives players an incentive to upgrade their equipment even if they are unsure how much it will be improved following a reset.
