It's also prone to get stuck on shoes and socks, and it couldn't navigate densely packed rooms very well during our tests. It also doesn't come with a camera that would let it see the corners of an area.

It's still a good deal for those whose home or office has a lot of unfinished flooring and you're looking to save some money. It's also very quiet and can work while you're at work, or school. The only thing it's missing that you can't find in the more expensive iRobot Roomba X30 is edge-to-edge vacuuming on bare floors. And it's less effective at mopping, as it relies on disposable wet wipes that don't stay on well and aren't able to deal with dried-on debris. The Q5 has self-emptying docks, however. And, if you need to, you can switch the mopping pad to a dry one in seconds.

This mop and vacuum combination has a sleek, circular design that looks more like a regular Roomba unit than the boxy models from the rivals. It's one of our most attractive robot vacuums. The newest model from iRobot is its most advanced, with advanced features including Enhanced Dirt Detection Technology and future compatibility with Matter (another company's robot that is able to wash mop pads).

It's the only robot vacuum/mop that scored an exemplary 10/10 in our tests thanks to a blend of high-tech sensors that include a camera, structured light system and multiple lasers. The X40 Ultra is also the only robot in our tests that can completely self-refill and empty its base station, and boasts an the industry's highest suction of 12,000Pa and self-cleaning mop pads.

The X40 as with other iRobot products, is simple to operate. It has an easy mobile application interface and integrates with Amazon Alexa and Apple HomeKit. The only downside is that the X40 still a noisy unit. This can be a problem in the mornings prior to work or in the evening when you're trying to sleep.

It's also a bit expensive however, not as expensive as the Ecovacs MaxV Ultra or Roborock S8 Omni, which are equally powerful and more attractive. If you're willing with a bit more noise and some extra cost, this is a very powerful two-in-one that will satisfy most people.

iRobot L20 Ultra

It also mopses with one pad that has an oscillating motion that is cleaner than the other mop cleaners for robots we've tested. And it's highly self-sufficient with a fully-featured app as well as an auto-emptying washable base.

The well-designed iRobot application guides you through an initial mapping exercise that collects information about your floorplan as well as any "no-go" areas you mark on the map.
