Jonathan Ive

Sir Jonathan Paul Ive, KBE, HonFREng, RDI (born February 27, 1967), known professionally as Jony Ive, is a British-American industrial designer who served as Chief Design Officer of Apple Inc. and is widely credited with defining the visual and tactile language of modern consumer technology. His designs for the iMac, iPod, iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch have influenced an entire generation of products across the technology industry.

Following a 27-year career at Apple, Ive departed in 2019 to co-found LoveFrom, a design consultancy whose clients include Ferrari, Airbnb, and OpenAI. In 2025, OpenAI acquired his artificial intelligence hardware venture, io, for $6.5 billion - potentially pushing his net worth above $1 billion.

As close collaborator and confidant of Steve Jobs, Ive helped transform Apple from a struggling computer company into the world's most valuable corporation.

Early life and education

Jonathan Paul Ive was born on February 27, 1967, in Chingford, a suburb in northeast London. His father, Michael Ive, was a silversmith who lectured at Middlesex Polytechnic, and his grandfather was an engineer. This familial background in craft and technical work planted early seeds for his design career.

When Ive was 12, his family moved to Stafford in the West Midlands. While attending Walton High School, he was diagnosed with dyslexia, a learning difficulty that would require him to develop alternative approaches to processing information. During his secondary school years, he met his future wife, Heather Pegg.

Ive's teenage fascination with cars initially drew him toward automotive design. He investigated car design programs in London, including one at the Royal College of Art, but was put off by what he perceived as the arrogant behavior of students there.

He ultimately enrolled at Newcastle Polytechnic (now Northumbria University) to study industrial design. The program introduced him to Bauhaus design philosophy, which emphasized functionalism and the principle of including only essential elements. Career

Tangerine

After graduating, Ive co-founded Tangerine, a London-based design consultancy. The firm attracted a variety of clients, including Apple, which commissioned Tangerine to design an early laptop concept. This work brought Ive to Apple's attention.

Apple (1992-2019)

Apple formally recruited Ive as a full-time employee in September 1992. He initially hesitated about the move from Britain to the United States but was persuaded by the creative opportunities.

Early Work and Near-Departure

Ive's first major assignment was the second generation of the Newton and the MessagePad 110. However, the early 1990s were difficult years at Apple. The company lacked focus on design, and Ive considered quitting.

Steve Jobs' return to Apple in 1997 transformed Ive's situation. Jobs, who shared Ive's obsession with design, promoted him to head of the Industrial Design Group. The two forged an extraordinarily close working relationship that would last until Jobs' death in 2011.

iMac and Design Renaissance

Ive's 1998 design for the iMac stunned the industry. The translucent, candy-colored computer with its seductively rounded exterior marked a dramatic departure from the beige boxes that dominated personal computing. The iMac sold two million units in its first year, delivering Apple's first profitable year since 1995.

The iMac established Ive's design philosophy: products should be intuitive, beautiful, and stripped of unnecessary complexity. "True simplicity," he would later explain, "is derived from so much more than just the absence of clutter and ornamentation."

Iconic Products

Working with Jobs, Ive led the design of products that would redefine multiple industries:

In June 2019, Apple announced that Ive would depart to form an independent design company, with Apple as a client. His departure marked the end of an era, though the transition was framed as collaborative rather than adversarial.

LoveFrom (2019-present)

Ive co-founded LoveFrom with his longtime collaborator Marc Newson. Apple was the firm's first client, though that relationship ended in 2022.

io and OpenAI (2024-2025)

In 2024, Ive founded io with former Apple colleagues Scott Cannon, Evans Hankey, and Tang Tan. The company focused on developing artificial intelligence hardware in partnership with OpenAI, reportedly working on a device intended to be "less socially disruptive than the iPhone."

In May 2025, OpenAI announced it would acquire io for $6.5 billion in stock - OpenAI's largest acquisition. The deal values Ive's approximately 11% stake at roughly $715 million. As part of the arrangement, LoveFrom will assume design responsibilities across all OpenAI operations while remaining an independent company.

The acquisition was completed in July 2025.

Personal life

Marriage and Family

Ive met his future wife, Heather Pegg, while both were students at Walton High School in Stafford. They married in 1987, the same year Ive graduated from secondary school.

Heather Pegg Ive is a historian and writer who maintains a low public profile. Despite her husband's fame, she has chosen to stay largely out of the spotlight, though she occasionally accompanies him to business events and conferences.

The couple has twin sons, Charlie and Harry, who have been raised away from media attention.

The family resides in the Pacific Heights neighborhood of San Francisco. In 2012, they purchased their San Francisco home for $17 million.

Ive is known for his love of cars - his teenage passion that initially drew him to design. He owns an Aston Martin DB4 and a Bentley, among other vehicles.

Controversies

Apple Exit Circumstances

While Apple framed Ive's departure as amicable, subsequent reporting raised questions about whether he had been disengaging from the company for years before his formal exit. The Wall Street Journal reported that Ive had become increasingly absent from day-to-day operations, spending more time in the UK and on outside interests.

Apple discontinued its design consulting contract with LoveFrom in 2022, suggesting the post-departure relationship had soured.

Design Critiques

Some of Ive's later Apple designs drew criticism for prioritizing aesthetics over functionality. The 2013 Mac Pro "trash can" design was faulted for thermal limitations, and some criticized the ultra-thin designs of later MacBooks for sacrificing battery life and ports.
