Niraj S. Shah (born 1973/1974) is an American businessman and co-founder, co-chairman, and chief executive officer of online retailer Wayfair, the largest online retailer of home furnishings in the United States.[1]
Wayfair generated $11.9 billion in net revenue for 2024.[2]
Early life and education
Shah was born in 1973 or 1974 in Pittsfield, Massachusetts. His father worked as a mechanical engineer for General Electric.[3]
He graduated from Cornell University in 1995 with a degree in engineering. At Cornell, he met his future business partner Steve Conine.[4]
Career
Founding Wayfair
In 2002, Shah and Conine founded CSN Stores, which was rebranded as Wayfair in 2011. In October 2014, Wayfair went public on the NYSE.[5]
Revenue peaked during the COVID-19 pandemic when consumers invested heavily in home furnishings.[6]
Controversies
In June 2019, Wayfair faced backlash for selling furniture to facilities housing migrant children, leading to employee walkouts.[7]
In December 2023, Shah sparked controversy with a memo encouraging employees to "blend work and life" and work longer hours.[8]
Personal life
Shah is married to Jill Shah, an entrepreneur who founded Jill's List. They have two children and reside in Boston's Back Bay neighborhood.[9]
