Upgrades boost the value of certain numeric stats on armor, weapons and rings. They also increase bonuses like crit chance and PvE damage.

Components

Upgrade components are items that can be put into weapons, armor, and trinkets to provide an additional stat boost or impact while they're being used. These can be obtained through crafting, buying from vendors trading, or looting. Some upgrades have special cosmetic effects.

Upgrade components can only be applied to equipment that has a slot. The item must be at least upgraded to blue level before the component can be used. In contrast to other mods components can only be used once and cannot be applied repeatedly or replaced by new upgrades. Infusions and Enrichments are type of upgrade component used to upgrade non-amulet legendary or Ascended equipment, as well other items that are not ascended. Infusions and enrichments can be retrieved by salvaging ascended gear or completing an elite task in the Prophecies, Factions and Nightfall campaigns.

An upgrade may be prefixed or a suffix, modifying the name of the equipment to which it is applied (for example "Canthan Armor Insignia" becomes Canthan Armor of Minor Vigor). Certain upgrades boost an item's Mark Level or Rarity, allowing players to create stronger versions of that equipment that require less Upgrade Crystals than are required to achieve the same level of upgrade through normal methods.

A 'boost upgrade' can alter the attack or defense characteristics of a weapon or armor. The value of each Glyph is displayed when you select it from your inventory. You can decide to replace it with a different Glyph of the same rank or higher rank, which will boost the value of the Glyph.

There are Glyphs in the Black Lion Trading Post, as part of a Gem Store purchase or bundle with certain gathering tools that are unlimited-use as well as through Faction Crypt raids. Once you have obtained the desired Glyphs you will require them to be placed on your equipment. Leveling

When an individual player improves a piece of equipment, the base item will be replaced with the new item. This means that the same armor piece will get the form of a shield or weapon when upgraded. The new item also comes with its own set bonus. This could be a drawback in that the item could increase in price even if you don't require it.

Upgrades to items can be rerolled if the player has enough reroll tokens to do so. The item will be replaced with the same item, but it has a level 1 basis and totally different bonuses.
