Components

Upgrade components can be added to trinkets, armor, and weapons in order to provide them with a boost in stats or to add an additional effect. These can be obtained through crafting, buying from vendors trading or looting. Certain upgrades come with special cosmetic effects.

Upgrade components can be placed in equipment with a slot for them. The item must have been at a minimum upgraded to blue level in order for the component to be inserted. Like other mods, upgrade components can only be used once; they cannot be applied multiple times or replaced by new upgrades. Infusions and enrichments are a type of upgrade component that can be used to upgrade non-amulet legendary or ascending equipment, as in some items that aren't ascended. Enrichments and Infusions can be obtained by salvaging equipment that is ascended or completing a quest in the Prophecies, Factions, and Nightfall campaigns.

An upgrade could have a prefix or suffix that alters the name of the equipment to the upgrade (for instance 'Canthan Armor Insignia is changed to Canthan Armor of Minor Vigor). Certain upgrades boost an item's Mark Level or Rarity, allowing players to create stronger versions of that equipment that require fewer Upgrade Crystals than would be required to achieve the same level of upgrade through normal methods.

A boost upgrade is a way to alter the attack or defense characteristics of a weapon or armor. Once the player has completed the cutscene and defeated the Crazed Mechanist the upgrades can be made at the Portative Forging Station. They can also be dropped by enemies while upgrading other gear, or by purchasing them in the cash shop for 500 upgrade crystals.

Each upgrade increases the likelihood that a higher-tier version of the item will be revealed during the next reset. This gives the player an incentive to keep improving their equipment, even if they're unsure of the extent to which it will improve following a subsequent reset.

Whether a boost upgrade is successful or not, the process may be costly, and there is a high chance that the item could become obsolete or even break when it fails; a failed upgrade will destroy Upgrade Crystals and Assist Powder, as well as the upgraded item. This is alleviated by the availability cash shop items to double or even eliminate the possibility of failure, and some upgrades that provide an additional benefit when they are inserted into an item upgrader mod.

Glyphs

The majority of upgrades in the game can be replaced however, Glyphs are only the one upgrade component that can be removed and re-placed without restriction. The only exception is legendary equipment that requires an Black Lion Salvage Kit to salvage and replace.

Each Glyph has a particular range of values it can improve a statistic by, and the value is displayed when you choose the Glyph in your inventory. You can replace it with another Glyph that is of the same or higher rank to boost the value of the Glyph.

Glyphs can be found in the Black Lion Trading Post as part of the Gem Store bundle or purchase, with certain unlimited-use tools, and during Faction Crypt Raids. Every Faction Crypt can drop one of these Glyphs. There are some rare glyphs that you can find in any of the Faction Crypts.

Once you have obtained the desired Glyphs, you will have to put them on your equipment. Each Glyph unlocks a unique bonus which will boost the stats of a specific set of nodes that are within the radius of the Glyph. Depending on the Glyph it could be +40 to one of your primary stats, or +25 to two of your secondary stats.

Using Glyphs Glyph will boost all the nodes that are linked to it, so it is recommended to position your Glyphs near the most important nodes of the Graph to maximize the impact. For instance, a Druid should try to position their Glyphs close to their primary damage nodes but you should also think about placing them near crucial damage nodes as well.

Leveling

The item upgrading system allows players to improve the stats of certain items by placing upgraded components in them. This is commonly known as "upping". Each upgradeable item has an amount that determines the final statistics. Upgraded items can be leveled up to a maximum of 385. Each level requires a different number of components, and the upgrade costs increase as the item is advanced in level.

Some upgrades require an ingredient to be activated. This ingredient can be obtained by completing Upgrade Recipes. These recipes can be found in the upgrade tab of a crafting table, or bought from NPCs. Each Upgrade Recipe completed will result in a certain amount of Technology points. These points can be used for leveling up an item. Once enough points are earned, you will be eligible to claim the upgrade and get its extra bonuses.

When the player upgrade a piece of equipment it is replaced by an item upgrader kit that is new. The same armor will receive the form of a weapon or shield when upgraded. The new item also has its own set of bonuses. This could be a disadvantage since the item may be more expensive even if you do not require it.

Item upgrades can sometimes be rerolled, if the player has enough tokens to be able to do this. The item will be replaced with the same item, but it is based on a level 1 base and totally different bonuses. This is a good idea, but shouldn't be done often as it can waste resources.

If an item is not able to upgrade, the amount of accumulated experience in its growth bar is reset to zero. In addition, the item will lose any bonuses it gained, including crit chance and attack damage, as well as any additional effects associated with the effect (for instance, an increase in heal over time or the speed of reloading). When an item is upgraded the upgrades are applied from lowest to the highest.
