Peritoneal mesothelioma symptoms may be similar to those of other conditions and can be mistaken for a hernia, digestive problems such as Crohn's disease or colitis, or other forms of abdominal cancer. Many patients don't report their asbestos exposure and don't seek medical care. Doctors may suggest a biopsy to confirm a diagnosis of mesothelioma. A biopsy involves the removal of a small portion of the affected tissue to test. This procedure can reveal the stage of mesothelioma as well as if it is epithelioid, biphasic or sarcomatoid.

If mesothelioma has reached an early stage, doctors can remove all the tumors and provide an effective treatment. The doctor can also determine if the cancer has been able to spread to the abdomen. They can then prescribe palliative treatment for the patient, such as paracentesis to drain the abdominal fluid.

The odds of survival are worse when a mesothelioma has advanced. The reason for this is that the tumors can become resistant to certain treatments, and they may be recurred. The doctor might suggest a combination of chemotherapy and surgery. Surgical options include cytoreduction surgery combined with hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy. This combination is more likely than chemotherapy alone to improve the prognosis of patients.
