If mesothelioma has been identified doctors may recommend the procedure of a biopsy to make an accurate diagnosis. A biopsy involves the removal of only a small amount of affected tissue for testing. This test can determine whether the mesothelioma has epithelioid (epidermoid), sarcomatoid (sarcomatoid) or biphasic.

If mesothelioma has not spread, doctors can remove the tumors. They will also provide a curative treatment. The specialist can also determine if the cancer has spread to the abdomen. They can then prescribe palliative treatment for the patient, such as paracentesis, which drains the abdominal fluid.

If mesothelioma progresses, the prognosis becomes poorer. The cancers can become resistant to certain treatment and then recur. The doctor may suggest an amalgamation of surgery and chemotherapy. Surgery options include cytoreduction combined with hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy. This combination is more likely to improve a patient's outlook than merely chemotherapy alone.
