The authors of the Pragmatic Free Trial Meta identified RCTs published up to 2022 that self-described themselves as pragmatic. The PRECIS-2 tool was employed to assess the pragmatism of these trials. It includes areas like eligibility criteria and flexibility in recruitment, adherence to intervention, and follow-up. They discovered that 14 of the trials scored as highly or pragmatic practical (i.e. scores of 5 or higher) in any one or more of these domains, and that the majority were single-center.

Trials with a high pragmatism score tend to have broader eligibility criteria than traditional RCTs, which include very specific criteria that are unlikely to be present in the clinical environment, and they include populations from a wide variety of hospitals. According to the authors, may make pragmatic trials more useful and relevant to the daily practice. However they do not guarantee that a trial will be free of bias. In addition, the pragmatism that is present in trials is not a fixed attribute A pragmatic trial that does not have all the characteristics of an explanatory trial can produce valid and useful results.
