This test will reveal whether the mesothelioma is epithelioid (epidermoid) or Sarcomatoid (sarcomatoid) or biphasic.

If mesothelioma has not spread it is possible to remove the tumors. They can also provide a curative treatment. The doctor can also determine if the cancer has spread to the abdomen. They may then recommend palliative treatments for the patient, including paracentesis, which drains the abdominal fluid.

The prognosis is worsened when a mesothelioma has advanced. The cancers can become resistant to certain treatment and may recur. The specialist may suggest a combination of chemotherapy and surgery. Surgery options include cytoreduction along with hyperthermic intraperitoneal therapy. This combination is more likely than chemotherapy by itself to improve the prognosis of a patient.
