A biopsy involves the removal of a small piece of tissue that is examined. This test will reveal whether the mesothelioma is epithelioid (epidermoid) or the sarcomatoid (sarcomatoid) or biphasic.

If mesothelioma has reached an early stage, doctors can remove all the tumors and provide curative treatment. The specialist can also determine if the cancer has been able to spread to the abdomen. They may then recommend palliative treatment for the patient, for example paracentesis to drain the fluid from the abdomen.

When a mesothelioma is advanced, the prognosis becomes poorer. This is because the tumors can become resistant to certain treatments and may recur. The doctor may recommend a combination of chemotherapy and surgery. Surgical options include cytoreduction surgery along with hyperthermic intraperitoneal therapy. This combination is more likely to improve the prognosis of a patient than chemotherapy on its own.
