The performance of many Path of Exile items can be enhanced by upgrading the performance of them. They can be a good source of damage and more AD or even more affixes.

Rare-grade equipment can be superior to the more modernized Common or Magic gear due to their higher requirements.

Armor

Armor upgrades can be applied to both weapon and armor items. They increase the effectiveness of the item they are connected to. Armor upgrades are found in the game's world and can be purchased from Blacksmiths at any bonfire. Alternatively, they can also be salvaged from items that have upgrade components inside them, using an expert or greater salvage kit.

The amount of damage an armored item or weapon will absorb is contingent on the degree of upgrades. The upgrade of an armor piece to maximum upgrade level will boost its ability to absorb damage. However, it's important to be aware that this upgrade will increase its weight, which will cause it to weigh more than it was before.

There are several different types of armor upgrades that are available in the game. Each one has a distinct impact. For instance, some upgrades give the armor a certain number of health points while others make it stronger and lighter. The kind of armor upgrade an item can get will be indicated by the name of the upgrade as indicated in the table below.

Certain upgrades require magic or a combination of technology and magic, which are indicated by the "Magic" and "Hybrids" entries in the table below. Some upgrades also require charges to use. They are referred to as "Charges" entries in the table. The charges associated with these upgrades are updated daily or never expire depending on the upgrade.

The cheapest way to upgrade armor is to use Iron Ore, which can be found through exploring the surroundings and looting small loot chests. For this reason, it is generally not recommended to upgrade the majority of armor pieces beyond +9, since the defensive boost gained is typically not worth the weight and power cost of the improvements required.

Weapons

Weapon upgrades give players the ability to improve certain aspects of their weapon. For instance an upgrade can improve the damage that is caused by a shotgun's shells or the accuracy of a rifle that snipes. Certain firearms have upgrades to improve their inherent qualities. These include Frictionless Materials (improves stability and decreases the chance of weapon overheating) and Kinetic Coils (increases the velocity of projectiles for greater damage).

Most weapon upgrades require one of three Power Dices, a different amount of Minerals and Erons and a whetblade. These can be gained by completing Side Quests or killing a certain amount of monsters and bosses.

Upgrading a Weapon, Equipment Set piece, or Whetblade requires visiting the NPC [Armor] Boboko in Central Flarine and paying her an upgrade cost that is based on a specific number of Bars. The higher the upgrade items level, the more bars you will need to complete the upgrade. The cost of the upgrades will be less if you have more than one of the upgrade materials.

In Chapter 2: Season 5, the way you upgrade your equipment and weapon sets has changed a bit. Previously you could search for an Upgrade Bench and pay a certain number of Bars to upgrade items your equipment or weapon to an increased quality. You could do this until your weapon or equipment reached its maximum upgrade level and at that point, the upgrades would reset.

Jewels

Jewels are placed in the sockets of armor and weapons, enhancing a stat and providing secondary effects. They can be created through an process known as jewelry crafting, which is where you combine a gem and a number of specific chemicals at a table. The higher the quality of the gem, the greater the secondary effect. These reagents can be obtained around the world from Treasure Goblins, World Bosses and sometimes by salvaging Legendary equipment. You can also buy them from The Jeweler for gold and a Scattered Prism.

The quality of a gem can be improved by the Jeweler in stages that vary from Crude to Royal. Depending on the tier of the jewel it can provide different stat boosts when it is inserted into weapons, equipment and jewelry.

All kinds of jewels can be crafted at the Jeweler however, there are some exceptions to this, such as the rare and legendary jewels that require you to be at a sufficient level to be able to get the privilege of having them. Unlike other upgrade components, jewels are able to be swapped by a different identical jewel without destroying it. However, you can only replace the jewels in a piece of equipment only once.

It is typical to use more gems for aesthetic reasons. Jewels also enhance performance and create a surface harder than steel, so that the repeated friction from pivots does not cause damage to them.

In addition to the above upgrades players can also obtain glyphs for their weapons and shields from a Glyphmaster. These glyphs give a slight boost and can be traded, but they're not guaranteed to be available as loot. Glyphs, like jewelry, can be upgraded at the Jeweler in exchange for Scattered Crystals and gold. Glyphs are also removed and returned to the inventory. Other upgrade components, such as traits and aegis are not swappable, and can only be retrieved using an Upgrade Extractor, or by salvaging them using the Black Lion Salvage Kit or Ascended Salvage Tool.

Trinkets

Trinkets are items of equipment that bestow many tiny but valuable benefits to your hero. You can find them in the start-up area as rewards for personal stories or loot. They are also available from vendors as well as through doing road interaction. They can also be found on the Trading Post, or crafted by jewelers.

The first trinkets that a player can unlock is the cloak. It grants a small but useful bonus in speed of movement and the ability to escape. The player will then be able to acquire rings, amulets and necklaces in a similar fashion similar to how they obtained weapons and armor. Each piece of equipment comes with one upgrade slot that can accept either a universal or jewel upgrade. Universal upgrades offer smaller bonuses and can be used in any type of equipment, while jewelry cannot be changed or upgraded and only works with certain types of trinkets.

These trinkets grant additional buffs and abilities that are active when the hero isn't in combat. This enables the hero to be more effective when not active and may also help make up for a lack of a solid team or the absence of any slots from the talent tree that would normally be filled with the hero's ideal stats.

A good general rule of thumb for trinket upgrades is to prioritize BiS (Best item upgrade-in-Slot) items that you will not replace in the near future, then any items with desirable stats that are less important than the iLevel of the item that is being upgraded. This is especially true when an item upgrader kit has multiple stats you'd like to upgrade, as it's usually better to upgrade just one crucial stat than two subpar ones.

Jungle players will often upgrade their yellow trinket to a red one prior to the start of the game. Mid and top players, on the other hand, will choose a green or a pink ward, based on the game's matchup. These choices will have a major impact on the hero's map control abilities.

Aside from the items listed above, players may also find a number of other items in the form of awards and trophies. These can be earned through completing certain milestones in the story, like finishing a chapter's main quest or killing a particular boss. These can be viewed by selecting the relevant achievement in the reward tab of the hero menu.
