A biopsy is the process of removing just a small portion of affected tissue for testing. If the mesothelioma is at an early stage, doctors can remove all of the tumors and provide curative treatment. The doctor will also be able to determine whether the cancer has spread within the abdomen. They may then recommend palliative care for the patient, such as paracentesis that drains abdominal fluid.

The odds of survival are worse when mesothelioma is advanced. This is because the tumors are able to become resistant to certain treatments and can develop a recurrence. The doctor may suggest a combination of chemotherapy and surgery. Surgery options include cytoreduction combined with hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy. This combination is more likely than chemotherapy by itself to improve the outlook of patients.
