The Best Robot Hoover

The best robot hoover can vacuum and mop without needing your attention, and it will leave your floors spotless. Its surprisingly affordable price and top-of-the-line features (such as dirt detection) are a plus.

Make sure you regularly check your robot's brushes for tangled hair as well as large debris and wash them if required. Some models can also automatically empty their onboard dustbin into a larger bin in the base, which reduces the amount of fine dust released into the air.

1. Roomba Q5 Pro

The Q5 Pro, and its more expensive sibling, the Q7 Max Series are among the most powerful robotic vacuums that we have tested. They are equipped with top-of-the-line motors which can pull up to 5,500 Pascals of suction force. As with other premium iRobot models (including the top pick), they use intelligent mapping technology to create detailed floor plans and avoid common obstacles like cords and furniture legs. They also have carpet boost, a feature which boosts the robot's power when it detects an abundance of dirt on the carpet to get it cleaned up quickly.

Both the Q5 and Q7 Max Series get very excellent scores in our tests on floors that are bare, and they're particularly adept in removing pet hair. However, they do have some flaws that prevent them from being our top pick. For instance, the Q5's navigation system doesn't have AI-powered obstacle avoidance, so it's prone to become entangled in shoes and socks, and is unable to navigate tightly packed rooms very efficiently in our tests. Also, it doesn't have an image sensor that lets it see the corners of a room.

Still, it's very good, especially if you want to save money on an Roomba from iRobot and have a mostly unfinished home or office. It's also very quiet and can be used while you are at work or in school. The only thing it lacks that you won't find in the pricier iRobot Roomba X30 is edge-to-edge vacuuming on floors that aren't clean. And it's less effective at mopping, using disposable wet wipes, which don't stick on well and aren't able to deal with dried-on debris. The Q5 is self-emptying cradle, however. If you want to change the mopping pad for a dry one in seconds.

In the course of testing, X30 Ultra was the quickest robot automatic vacuum and mop/mop that could clean an entire home, with 66 per cent of its battery remaining. It also did a great job cleaning a range of floors and rooms with mixed flooring types, including some area rugs. Its obstacle detection was superb and it stayed clear of fake dog turds and socks, shoes and bundles cables.

It's a little more expensive than iRobot Combo v9+ or iRobot Roomba j9+ but has superior suction and an onboard bin that automatically empty into the base. It also supports voice commands using Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant. It is able to clean floors even after it vacuums. This is something we haven't seen before on other robotic vacuum/mop combos.

5. iRobot Roomba RX3

The RX3 is more sophisticated than its price suggests. It vacuums well and was able to remove 55% of debris in our tests. (It was second to the Roomba Q5 Pro). It also mops with one pad, which uses a reciprocating motion, which is cleaner than the other robot mop cleaners we've examined. And it's highly self-sufficient with a full-featured app and an auto-emptying washable base.

The iRobot app is designed to guide you through a mapping run that collects data on your floorplan as well as any "no go" areas you've marked on the map. It is also noisier than other top robot vacuums that we have test. It also has an app that is less intuitive and a small base station that does not double as a bin to empty.
