Upgrades boost the value of certain numeric statistics on armor, weapons and rings. They also increase bonuses like PvE damage and crit chance.

The cost for upgrading items increases when they reach the item's current level. The cost increases with item upgrades's level.

Components

Upgrade components can be added to trinkets, armor, and weapons in order to give them a boost in stats or an extra effect. These can be obtained through crafting, buying from vendors trading, or looting. Some upgrades have special cosmetic effects.

Upgrade components are only available to devices that have slots. The item must be at least upgraded to blue level before the component can be used. An upgrade can have a prefix or suffix, modifying the name of the equipment with which it is applied (for instancefor example 'Canthan Armor Insignia" becomes Canthan Armor of Minor Vigor). Certain upgrades boost the Mark Level or Rarity of an item, allowing players to create stronger versions using the smallest amount of Upgrade crystals than they would need to reach the same level using normal methods.

A boost upgrade can alter the attack or defense attributes of a weapon, or armor. After the player has completed the cutscene and defeated the Crazed Mechanist the upgrades can be crafted at the Portative Forging Station. They can be dropped by enemies when upgrading other gear or by purchasing them in the cash shop for 500 upgrade crystals.

The player can get a maximum of five boost upgrades at one time. Each upgrade increases the likelihood that a higher-tier version of the item will appear during the next reset. This gives the player an incentive to continue improving their equipment, even if they're unsure of how much it will improve following a subsequent reset.

The process of upgrading an item could be expensive, and it is possible that the item will become obsolete or even break when the upgrade is unsuccessful. Upgrade Crystals and assist powder are also destroyed when the upgrade fails. This is alleviated by the availability cash shop items that double or even eliminate the chance of failure, as well as a few upgrades that give the benefit of being reinserted into an item.

Glyphs

Failures can result in the item returning to its original condition and the player having to pay for more items than if they stopped upgrading after the maximum number.

If an item is not upgraded the experience bar on its growth bar will be reset to zero. The item also loses any bonuses it earned, such as the chance to crit damage to attack, additional effects (such as a higher healing rate over time or reloading speed). The player is able to use their weapon or armor even after the failure.

If an item is upgraded, the upgrades are applied in order from lowest to highest. This means that, if a weapon gains an increase in its crit chance the increase is applied prior to any increase in attack damage. A new attribute known as Slots is now added to the item definition and the value is calculated each time an upgrade is made.

The amount of resources needed to upgrade an item is determined on the rarity rating and number of upgrade slots. The cost of upgrading non-premium equipment is equal to its base value. For instance an item of common use could have five upgrades at a cost. 25600 Technology Points, 4x Quality Improvement Chance. Hero grade items are less expensive per upgrade.

Premium items have different requirements for upgrading than standard gear--for instance, they might require fewer sowels, but more minerals and erons.
