Upgrades increase the value of certain numeric stats on armor, weapons and rings. Upgrades also increase bonuses such as Crit chance and PvE Damage.

For example, a weapon with the upgrade template that ends in % will suffer 3damage to attack each time it upgrades (relative to its previous value).

The cost of upgrading an item increases as it reaches the item's current level. The cost increases with item's level.

Components

Upgrade components can be added to trinkets, armor, and weapons to give them a boost in stats or an extra effect. They can be acquired through crafting, purchasing from vendors, trading or looting. Some upgrades have special cosmetic effects.

Upgrade components can only be used on equipment that has a slot. The item must be at least upgraded to a blue level before a component can be used. Upgrade components, unlike other modifications, can only be applied once. They are not able to be replaced or applied multiple times. Infusions and enrichments are a particular kind of upgrade component that is that is designed for non-amulet ascended and legendary equipment and some of the back items that are not ascending. Infusions and enrichments can be recovered by salvaging gear that is ascended or by completing an elite mission in the Prophecies, Factions and Nightfall campaigns.

A prefix or suffix may be added to an upgrade, changing the name of the item it's applied to (for example 'Canthan Armor Insignia,' becomes Canthan Armor Minor Vigor). Some upgrades increase the Mark Rarity or Level of an item, allowing players to create stronger versions of the item using fewer Upgrade crystals than they would need to reach the same level using standard methods.

A 'boost upgrade' can modify the attack or defense characteristics of a weapon or armor. After the player has completed the cutscene and defeated Crazed Mechanist, these upgrades can be created at the Portative Forging Station. These upgrades can be obtained by purchasing them from the cash shop or by getting them from enemies while upgrading other gear.

Each upgrade increases the likelihood that a higher tier version of an item will be dropped in the next reset. This gives players the opportunity to upgrade their equipment even in the event that they don't know what can be improved upon the reset.

Leveling
