Satya Narayana Nadella (born August 19, 1967) is an Indian-American business executive who is the chairman and chief executive officer (CEO) of Microsoft. He succeeded Steve Ballmer as CEO on February 4, 2014,[1] and was appointed chairman in June 2021, succeeding John W. Thompson.[2]
Under Nadella's leadership, Microsoft has undergone a dramatic cultural transformation and strategic pivot toward cloud computing, artificial intelligence, and open-source technologies. The company's market capitalization grew from approximately $300 billion in 2014 to over $3 trillion in 2024,[3] making it one of the most valuable companies in the world. Nadella is widely credited with revitalizing Microsoft and positioning it as a leader in enterprise cloud services and AI.[4]
Early life and education
Satya Nadella was born on August 19, 1967, in Hyderabad, Telangana, India. His father, Bukkapuram Nadella Yugandhar, was an Indian Administrative Service officer, and his mother was a Sanskrit lecturer.[5] Growing up in India, Nadella developed an early interest in cricket and technology.
Nadella received his bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from the Manipal Institute of Technology in Karnataka, India, in 1988.[6] He then moved to the United States to pursue higher education, earning a Master of Science degree in computer science from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee in 1990. He later received a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business in 1996.[6]

After completing his master's degree, Nadella worked at Sun Microsystems as a technology staff member before joining Microsoft in 1992.[7]

Early roles (1992–2011)
Nadella joined Microsoft in 1992 and held various leadership positions over the next two decades, including leading the development of Windows NT operating system and serving as Vice President of the Microsoft Business Division.[7]
Cloud and Enterprise leadership (2011–2014)
In 2011, Nadella was promoted to President of the Server and Tools Business, where he was responsible for the company's computing platforms, developer tools, and cloud computing services.[8] In this role, he led the transformation of Microsoft's business to cloud infrastructure and services, overseeing the growth of Azure from startup to multi-billion dollar business.[9]
His success in cloud computing and his vision for Microsoft's future made him the leading candidate to succeed Steve Ballmer.
CEO (2014–present)
On February 4, 2014, Nadella was announced as Microsoft's third CEO, succeeding Steve Ballmer.[1] On June 16, 2021, he also became chairman of the board, succeeding John W. Thompson.[2]

Personal life
Nadella is married to Anupama, the daughter of his father's IAS batchmate. They met in high school in Hyderabad and married in 1992. The couple has three children.[5]
His eldest son, Zain, was born with cerebral palsy and passed away in 2022 at age 26.[26] This experience deeply influenced Nadella's perspective on empathy and accessibility in technology. He has been a strong advocate for accessibility features in Microsoft products and disability rights.
Nadella is an avid cricket fan and has been involved in cricket organizations in the United States. He also practices mindfulness and meditation.
