There are a variety of theories on how the level of an item is calculated. One theory states that the item level is calculated by formulas that determine how valuable the stats of an item really are. It considers the fact that various perks have different value and that gems in sockets add to the value of the item overall. This can result in a calculated amount for the item's ilvl, which is typically close to Blizzard's real item level.

However, this is not the only factor which affects an item's ilvl, since the level of the region the item was dropped in could change the value of its stats, for example by adding an additional level to its crit rating or haste rating. Items dropped in higher-level instances will have a higher ilvl.

Item Stats

The item's stats can determine the fate of an item for players. The game uses a lot of them in different ways to encourage players to use multiple weapons, and prevent one weapon from being "the Best item upgrader." The base stats on a weapon are enhanced by the weapon's stat mods, which are themselves enhanced by the player's level.

This is another aspect that could be changed by adding an option to upgrade the equipment without having to reroll the affixes or deciding which stats to increase. But, like base equipment, this would need to be carried out on a per-item level, and the item compare interface would not display all the possible stats that were gained or lost at the same time.

Item Luck

The Luck stat for a player adds up to increase the chances of item discoveries as well as the properties that appear on loot drops and the strength of those properties. It does not, however directly impact damage or the ability to upgrade items. It simply gives players a possibility to obtain better equipment in earlier waves and is thus more valuable in the initial game run than later ones since most players prefer more powerful weapon scaling and defenses over damage gains.

In addition to influencing the discovery of items, Luck also increases the chance of success when upgrading items using the Blacksmith. This should not be confused with the Blacksmith's overall upgrade chance, which increases with each level and can be further enhanced through the use of an anti-material such as a Scroll of Strength or a Jewel of Blessing.

Armor, shields and weapons come with the default Luck value of 40. These items can be enhanced by golden ingots, spined leather or oak boards (depending on the material of the item) to grant a further +40 Luck or to increase the Luck of an item up to 140.

Certain items, such as the weapon with Hollow-infused components can also be outfitted to increase the damage dealt by any ability that causes damage by 5percent. These items can be found in the shop or created using the right ingredients.

Item Failure

Not all upgrades are successful. Cash shop items can be used to increase the chances of success for an upgrade or to prevent players from losing their item in the event that it fails.

The success rate of an upgrade can be seen in the Honing UI. The percentage represents the chance of successfully upgrading that item, and can be enhanced by adding Additional Materials or Special Materials. There are limitations to the extent to which the success rates can be improved, and the overall chance of a failed upgrade cannot exceed 100%..

The luck of an item can affect the effectiveness of an upgrade. Every item has an average success rate of 25%, and every item that has Luck increases that chance by an additional 5percent.

Note that item upgrades are rendered above the inventory items which means that enchantment glints and other effects could be obscured by the overlays.
