Pichai Sundararajan (born June 10, 1972), better known as Sundar Pichai, is an Indian-American business executive who is the chief executive officer (CEO) of Alphabet Inc. and its subsidiary Google.[1] Pichai began his career as a materials engineer and transitioned to technology, joining Google in 2004. He eventually became the CEO of Google in October 2015[2] and also became CEO of Alphabet in December 2019.[1]
Under Pichai's leadership, Google has expanded its hardware product lines, grown its cloud computing business, and invested heavily in artificial intelligence. He has navigated significant antitrust challenges and led Google through critical technological transitions including the rise of AI and large language models.
Early life and education
Pichai Sundararajan was born on June 10, 1972, in Madurai, Tamil Nadu, India, to Lakshmi and Regunatha Pichai. His father was an electrical engineer at the British conglomerate GEC (General Electric Company), and his mother was a stenographer before becoming a homemaker.[3] Pichai grew up in a two-room apartment in Ashok Nagar, Chennai.
Pichai received his degree from Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur in metallurgical engineering and is a distinguished alumnus from that institution.[4] He earned an M.S. from Stanford University in materials science and engineering and an MBA from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, where he was named a Siebel Scholar and Palmer Scholar.[5]
After graduating from Wharton, Pichai worked in management consulting at McKinsey & Company.[3]
Career
Early career (2004–2013)
Pichai joined Google in 2004 as a product manager.[6] His early work focused on Google's client software products, including Google Chrome and Chrome OS.
Pichai led product management for Google Toolbar and suggested and led development of Google Chrome browser, which launched in 2008.[7] Chrome became one of Google's most successful products and the world's most popular web browser,[8] demonstrating Pichai's product vision and execution capabilities.

On March 13, 2013, Pichai added Android to his portfolio, which had previously been under Andy Rubin.[9] This consolidated Google's operating system platforms under Pichai's leadership, overseeing Android expansion to over 2 billion active devices.
CEO of Google (2015–2019)
On August 10, 2015, Google announced a corporate restructuring creating Alphabet Inc. as a parent company. Sundar Pichai was named CEO of Google, while Larry Page became CEO of Alphabet.[2]

CEO of Alphabet (2019–present)
On December 3, 2019, Pichai was announced as the CEO of Alphabet Inc., replacing Larry Page, while maintaining his role as Google CEO.[1] This made him responsible for all Alphabet's businesses, including Google, Waymo, Verily, Calico, and other ventures.

Pichai launched Bard AI chatbot in response to ChatGPT competition in February 2023,[14] later rebranding it to Gemini and launching the Gemini AI platform.[15] Google integrated AI across Search, Gmail, Docs, and all products.

Pichai testified before U.S. Congress on antitrust concerns in 2020[16] and navigated multiple DOJ and state antitrust lawsuits against Google,[17] along with EU antitrust actions.
Financial performance
Revenue grew from $161 billion (2019) to $307 billion (2023),[18] though Google faced its first major layoffs in company history with 12,000 employees let go in January 2023.[19]
Compensation
Pichai's compensation has been among the highest for tech CEOs. His 2022 compensation was $226 million,[20] with 2020 compensation reaching $280.6 million including special stock grants.[21]
