James Rupert Jacob Murdoch (born December 13, 1972) is a British-American businessman and investor, the younger son of media mogul Rupert Murdoch. Once considered heir apparent to his father's media empire, James served as CEO of 21st Century Fox from 2015 to 2019 and held senior roles at News International and BSkyB. He departed the family business amid disagreements over editorial direction, corporate governance, and climate policy, founding his own investment company, Lupa Systems. His public break from Fox News over its climate denial and coverage of the 2020 election made him an unusual figure: a Murdoch who rejected the family legacy.

Early Life

Family Background

James Murdoch was born in Wimbledon, London, the second son of Rupert Murdoch and his second wife, journalist Anna Murdoch (née Torv). His older brother is Lachlan Murdoch, who ultimately became heir to the family empire. His older sister is Elisabeth Murdoch.

Growing up, James was exposed to the media business through his father's expanding empire, which at the time included newspapers in Australia, the UK, and the United States.

Education

James attended Horace Mann School in New York, then enrolled at Harvard University in 1991 studying film and history. He dropped out in 1995 without completing his degree, eager to enter business.

Personal Life

Marriage and Family

In 2000, James married Kathryn Hufschmid, a former model and public relations executive who later became active in climate advocacy. The couple has three children.

Kathryn has been vocal about climate change and influenced James's increasing focus on environmental issues.

Departure from Family

James's public departure from the Murdoch media companies—and his vocal criticism of Fox News editorial positions—represented an unusual break from family loyalty. The dynamics have been compared to the HBO series Succession, which is reportedly inspired partly by the Murdoch family.

Career

Rawkus Records (1996-2000)

In 1996, James co-founded Rawkus Records, an independent hip-hop record label. The label signed artists including Mos Def, Talib Kweli, and Common, developing a reputation for "conscious" hip-hop.

News Corporation invested in Rawkus, and the label achieved commercial and critical success before being sold in 2002.

News Corporation/News Corp (2000-2011)

Star TV

In 2000, James joined News Corporation in a senior role, eventually becoming Chairman and CEO of Star TV, the Hong Kong-based Asian satellite network. He oversaw significant expansion in India and China.

BSkyB

In 2003, James became CEO of BSkyB, the UK satellite television company in which News Corp held a significant stake. During his tenure:

  • BSkyB revenues grew substantially
  • Launched Sky+ HD and Sky Broadband
  • Expanded into telecommunications

Phone-Hacking Scandal

James's tenure at News International (the UK newspaper division) was engulfed by the News International phone hacking scandal:

  • The Scandal: Journalists at News of the World illegally hacked phones of celebrities, politicians, crime victims, and soldiers' families
  • James's Role: As chairman of News International, questions arose about what he knew and when
  • Parliamentary Testimony: James testified before Parliament multiple times, denying knowledge of widespread hacking
  • "News of the World" Closure: The paper was shut down in July 2011
  • Aftermath: James was criticized for inadequate oversight but never faced criminal charges

The scandal damaged James's reputation and raised questions about whether he would inherit leadership of the Murdoch empire.

21st Century Fox (2011-2019)

Deputy COO, then CEO

After the News Corp/21st Century Fox split in 2013, James became Deputy COO of 21st Century Fox. In 2015, he was promoted to CEO, with his father remaining Executive Chairman.

Fox Leadership

As CEO, James oversaw:

  • Fox's television and film production
  • National Geographic partnership
  • Digital streaming investments
  • Fox Sports operations

Disney Sale

In December 2017, 21st Century Fox agreed to sell most of its entertainment assets to The Walt Disney Company for $71.3 billion (ultimately $71.3B in 2019). James negotiated the deal, which included 20th Century Fox, FX Networks, National Geographic, and Fox's stake in Hulu.

The remaining "new" Fox—Fox News, Fox Sports, and Fox Broadcasting—would be run by Lachlan. James departed after the Disney transaction closed.

Departure from Fox

Editorial Disagreements

James increasingly disagreed with Fox News's editorial direction under Lachlan and Rupert, particularly regarding:

  • Climate change: Fox News's skeptical coverage conflicted with James's advocacy
  • Donald Trump: Fox's support for Trump and coverage of the 2020 election
  • Governance: Broader concerns about ethical standards

Public Criticism

In August 2020, James and Kathryn publicly criticized News Corp and Fox for "denial" of climate change. The statement was extraordinary: a Murdoch publicly attacking his family's flagship properties.

News Corp Board Resignation

In July 2020, James resigned from the News Corp board, citing "disagreements over certain editorial content published by the company's news outlets and certain other strategic decisions."

Lupa Systems (2019-Present)

Founding

After departing Fox, James founded Lupa Systems, a private investment company focused on:

  • Media and entertainment
  • Technology
  • Sustainability and climate
  • Disruptive innovation

Investments

Lupa Systems has invested in companies including:

Board Positions

James serves on several prominent boards:

  • Tesla (2017-present): Joined Elon Musk's board
  • Vroom: Online car sales platform

His Tesla board membership reflects his interest in sustainability and clean energy.

Climate Advocacy

James has become increasingly vocal on climate change:

  • Invested in clean technology through Lupa
  • Publicly criticized climate denial media coverage
  • Supports organizations advocating climate action
  • His wife Kathryn co-founded Climate Emergency Fund

This advocacy directly contradicts the editorial position of Fox News and represents James's clearest break from the family business.

Controversies

Phone-Hacking Knowledge

Questions persist about what James knew about phone hacking at News of the World. While he was not charged, critics argue his oversight was inadequate.

Family Split

James's public departure from the family media enterprise created a permanent rupture with his father and brother. The succession battle was "won" by Lachlan without James's participation.

Philosophy

  • "The actions of media businesses, in particular, can have a profound impact on the quality of public debate."
  • "Climate change is an existential threat to humanity that demands urgent action."
  • On Fox departure: "There are clear differences of opinion in our family about the role of media in society."

Legacy

James Murdoch's career arc—from hip-hop label founder to media heir to climate advocate who broke with his family—represents an unusual trajectory in business history. His departure from the Murdoch empire highlighted tensions between traditional media and changing societal expectations around climate and governance.

Whether his post-Fox ventures succeed remains to be seen, but his willingness to publicly criticize his family's media properties made him a unique figure in the business world.
