Early Life and Education

Nadella was born in Hyderabad, India. He received a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from the Manipal Institute of Technology in Karnataka in 1988. He then moved to the United States to study for a Master of Science in computer science at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, graduating in 1990. He later received an MBA from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business in 1997.

Career

Early Microsoft Career

Nadella joined Microsoft in 1992. During his early years, he worked in various capacities across the company's enterprise technology and cloud computing divisions.

Cloud and Enterprise Leadership

In 2011, Nadella was promoted to president of Microsoft's Server and Tools Business, a division that generated over $19 billion in revenue. He led the transformation of Microsoft's server business to a cloud-based infrastructure, which became Microsoft Azure.

CEO of Microsoft

On February 4, 2014, Nadella was appointed CEO of Microsoft, succeeding Steve Ballmer. His appointment marked a shift in Microsoft's strategy toward:

  • Cloud computing: Expanding Azure to compete with Amazon Web Services
  • Mobile-first, cloud-first: Focusing on cross-platform solutions
  • Open source: Embracing Linux and open-source technologies
  • Acquisitions: LinkedIn (2016), GitHub (2018), Activision Blizzard (2023)
  • Cultural transformation: Promoting a "growth mindset" culture

Under Nadella's leadership, Microsoft's market capitalization grew from approximately $300 billion to over $3 trillion by 2024.

Leadership Philosophy

Nadella is known for promoting a "growth mindset" philosophy, inspired by psychologist Carol Dweck's work. He emphasizes:

  • Empathy in leadership
  • Continuous learning
  • Customer-centric innovation
  • Inclusive culture

His leadership style contrasts with his predecessors, focusing on collaboration over competition.

Compensation

As of 2023, Nadella's total compensation package was approximately $48 million, including base salary, stock awards, and performance bonuses.

Personal Life

Nadella is married to Anupama, and they have three children. He is an avid reader and cricket fan. His son Zain, who had cerebral palsy, passed away in 2022, which deeply influenced Nadella's perspective on empathy and accessibility in technology.
