After the 1993 blockbuster film Free Willy stirred public outrage for orca Keiko's return to the wild, activists and marine biologists hoped that Lolita might have a similar fate. Unfortunately, she didn't get the chance to go back to the ocean.

Lolita's captors, known as the Dolphin Company, have ignored veterinary recommendations and continued to put her at risk. They undermine her health by making her perform for tourists, putting too much stress on her with head-first dives, exposing her to chlorine, making her lose weight and harming her immune system. They also put her in a tank that is one-and-a-half times smaller her natural habitat.

In 2022, a new owner of Miami Seaquarium, who calls Lolita a relative of theirs, promised to develop an arrangement with a group of Lolita supporters known as Friends of Toki, and the Lummi Tribe, to move her to eventually open water. The plan included a facility in Washington's westcoast, where she could spend the rest of her days receiving human care and be monitored by scientists. The sanctuary pen was planned to be hundreds of time larger than her Miami house and surrounded by ocean, not concrete tanks.

If the plan was successful, Lolita (also called Tokitae or Toki) could be alive. In the wild, killer whales are social animals that are close to their family members until death. Akromas and others who have trained or overseen Lolita's health in the past are concerned about her diet. According to the most recent update on the Friends of Lolita site, she consumes 115 pounds of salmon a day, in addition to capelin, herring and squid.

Miami Seaquarium, and in particular Lolita, has been critiqued for the quality of the food they feed their killer whales. The 57-year-old orca was taken from Puget Sound in 1970, and despite being endangered in the wild, she is in an aquarium that some claim is too small for her.

The Miami Seaquarium which is now owned by the Dolphin Company, has not shared information on Lolita's current state of health. However, the non-profit organization Friends of Toki has provided monthly updates on her health and well-being on their website. These updates indicate that Toki is ageing rapidly and that her health has declined.

It is not known what health issues are affecting the orca, as her captor isn't obliged to disclose the information. However, a repository of necropsies taken from Sea World that was created by the Orca Project shows that kidney disease is often a factor in the death of orcas kept in captivity.

Despite the ongoing health issues there is a lot of hope that Lolita may be closer to living in the wild than before. Seaquarium's new owner Seaquarium has made it clear that he will work to relocate the whale out of her tank to her natural waters in the Pacific.

After years of pressure from PETA and others and the Miami Seaquarium has finally released Lolita to a sanctuary on the ocean, where she can take a deep dive in the ocean and possibly even be reconnect with her orca mother. Unfortunately these plans came late for the beloved whale who died on Friday of what was believed to be a kidney issue.
