Upgrades can increase the value of armors, weapons and rings. Upgrades also boost bonuses like Crit chance and damage from PvE.

If the weapon's upgrade template is %, it will increase an additional 3% of the previous damage for every time it is upgraded.

Components

Upgrade components can be incorporated into trinkets, weapons and armor to provide them with a boost in stats or to add an additional effect. They can be obtained by crafting, purchasing from vendors trading, or looting. Certain upgrades have unique cosmetic effects.

Upgrade components can be inserted into any equipment with a slot for them; the item must have been at least upgraded to the blue level in order for the component to be used. Unlike other mods, upgrade components can only be used once; they cannot be applied multiple times or replaced with new upgrades. Infusions and enrichments are a particular kind of upgrade component that is used to upgrade item, Click To See More, non-amulet ascended or legendary equipment as well as the back items that are not ascending. Infusions and enrichments can be obtained by salvaging equipment that is ascended or by completing a mission within the Prophecies, Factions, and Nightfall campaigns.

An upgrade could have a prefix or suffix, modifying the name of the item to the upgrade (for instancefor example 'Canthan Armor Insignia" becomes Canthan Armor of Minor Vigor). This gives players the opportunity to upgrade their equipment even in the event that they don't know how much it will be improved following a reset.

Whether a boost upgrade is successful or not, the process may be costly and there is a significant possibility that the item will become obsolete or even break when it fails. A failed upgrade will ruin the Upgrade Crystals and Assist Powder, as well as the upgraded item. This is alleviated by the availability cash shop items that double or even eliminate the chance of failure, and some upgrades that provide a bonus when reinserted into an item.

Glyphs

Glyphs are upgrade components that can be inserted into special sockets on the Paragon Board. It is commonplace to see in the endgame that putting Glyphs is the best way to upgrade your gear. Most of the upgrades in the game can be replaced, however, Glyphs are only the one upgrade component that can be removed and put back in place without restriction. The only exception is legendary equipment that requires the use of a Black Lion Salvage Kit to salvage and re-place.

The value of each Glyph is displayed when you choose it in your inventory. You can replace it with a Glyph of the same rank, or a higher rank, which will boost the value of the glyph.

Glyphs are available in the Black Lion Trading Post as part of the Gem Store bundle or purchase, with certain unlimited-use tools and also during Faction Crypt Raids. Each Faction Crypt can drop one of these Glyphs. There are some rare glyphs you can find in any of the Faction Crypts.

Once you have the desired Glyphs then you need to place them on your gear. Each Glyph unlocks a unique bonus which will boost a specific set of stat nodes within a radius around the Glyph. It could be +40 for one of your primary stats or +25 for two of your secondary stats, based on the Glyph.

Glyphs boost all nodes that are connected to them, so it is recommended to place Glyphs in key spots on the Graph. This will increase the impact. For instance, a Druid should aim to place their Glyphs near their primary damage nodes, but also think about placing them near crucial damage nodes, too.

Leveling

The system of upgrading items allows players to improve the stats of specific items by putting upgraded components in them. This is commonly known as "upping". Every upgradeable item is assigned a level which determines the final statistics. Upgraded items can be upgraded up to a maximum level of 385. Each level of item requires various components, and upgrade costs increase with each level.

Certain upgrades require a specific ingredient to activate. This ingredient is obtained from the completion of Upgrade Recipes. These recipes are available in the upgrade tab of a crafting table or obtained from NPCs. Each Upgrade Recipe that is completed earns some Technology Points. These points can be used to upgrade the item. Once enough points are earned, the upgrade will be claimed and the additional bonuses will be added to the item.

When the player upgrades a piece of equipment, the base item upgrader is replaced by a new item. This means that the same armor piece will get an weapon or shield once upgraded. The new item will have a unique bonus. This can be a disadvantage in that it could cause the item to become more expensive if you do not require it.

If the player has enough tokens they can roll the upgrade of their item. The item will be replaced by an entirely new item that has a base of level 1 and totally different bonuses. This can be beneficial, but shouldn't be done often as it can be a waste of resources.

Certain upgrades can boost their value, allowing players to customize their equipment. Dolphin's Gift is a good example, since it grants a buff if the player is repeatedly in or exits the water. This item can be upgraded many times by increasing the maximum roll every time by 10 increments. This item is extremely important in PvP. A perfectly rolled version could be worth 50 times the value of its non-upgraded counterpart.

Requirements

The ability to upgrade items allows players to boost the quality of their equippable gear--armor, weapons and trinkets that are above ilvl 385 by offering the appropriate items and currency to an NPC that upgrades items. Upgrades to armor set pieces also increase the defense base of the item, and upgrading weapon items will increase the base damage as well as the required strength and dexterity to meet the upgraded equipment's requirements.

All items can be upgraded a maximum of five times, with the exception of hero gear which can be upgraded up to eight times. Every time you upgrade a piece of equipment, it is at risk of failing. The probability of failure increases when you exceed the maximum number. Failures can result in the item upgrader reverting to its original state, which will force the user to pay more for materials than they would had they stopped upgrading at the maximum amount of upgrades.

If an item fails to upgrade the amount of experience in its growth bar is reset to zero. In addition the item will be deducted any bonuses it gained such as crit chance and attack damage, as well as all other effects that are associated with that effect (for instance, a higher healing over time or speed of reload). The player is able to use their weapon or armor after the failure.

When an item is upgraded the upgrades are applied from the lowest to highest. This means that when a weapon is upgraded, if it receives a crit chance boost it will be applied before any damage to attack increases. The amount of resources required to upgrade an item is based on the rarity rating and the number of upgrade slots. The cost for upgrading non-premium items is the same as the base value of the upgrade. For instance, a typical equipment item could have five upgrades at a cost of 25,600 Technology Points and 4x Quality Improvement Chance. Hero grade items will come with an incredibly lower cost for each upgrade.

Premium items have different requirements for upgrading as compared to standard equipment, for instance, they may require fewer sowels, but they will require more minerals and erons.
