Item upgrades are a way to boost the stats of an item. Based on the type of upgrade, it can increase an item's Rarity or Mark Level, and also boost other stats.

Each item comes with a track for upgrading it. Each upgrade increases the cost of the next one by a set amount.

Item Level

The value of an item's base stats increase when it is upgraded. This is the sum of all of its leveled up advantages (attack, magic attack and defense). Upgrades to items can be costly dependent on the upgrader and what kind of upgrade you decide to do. This is due to the fact that many perks need to be replaced in order for the item to be upgraded.

The level of an item is a popular measure of power, and is visible on all item tooltips. It is also used to determine a gating condition when waiting to queue for dungeons and scenarios and raids, and to limit the amount of PvP gear that a player can wear (since PvP is capped at a lower level). The average level of an item can be found in the character sheet.

When deciding to purchase or sell gear players can look at the levels of the item. It's a sign of the item's damage and quality. The level of an item can be used to compare items when examining the inventory of a vendor.

On PC, you can check the level of the item by pressing ALT or by using the left stick on XB1 or PS4. This will display the item level upgrade's full description, including the ilvl. You can also locate it by hovering over an item and typing in /itemlevel chat.

There are various theories on how the calculation of an item's level is carried out. One theory is that the level is a number derived from a formula which calculates the value of an item's stats are worth. It takes into consideration that different perks are valued differently, and that gems in the sockets increase the value of the item. This can result in a calculated item's ilvl that is usually very close to Blizzard's actual level of the item.

This isn't the only factor that influences the value of an item. The location of where the item was dropped may alter its stats. For instance, it could add a level to the item's haste or crit rating. Item Stats

Currently, all affixes can be changed by selecting them from the upgrade window and pressing the green button using circling arrows. This process will cost the player a certain amount of gold as well as items that can be used to add to the upgrade gauge in the same manner as the other options for rerolling.

Players can upgrade an item by a specific stat or reroll the affixes. The range of stats determined by the item's level. However every item will have at least one stat within that range unless they are an item that is unique, or the item is a God Roll from a boss in a raid.

Another thing that could change is the possibility of upgrading equipment without having to reroll attachments, or pick which stats to enhance. As with the base equipment, it would have to be done per item and the interface for item comparison would not display all the possible stats simultaneously.

Item Luck

The Luck stat of a player boosts the probability of obtaining items as well as the properties spawned by loot and the intensity of these properties. However, it does not directly affect damage or ability to upgrade items. It merely gives the player a chance to acquire better equipment in earlier waves and is therefore more beneficial in the initial game run than later ones since most players prefer more powerful weapon scaling and defenses over damage gains.

Luck can also increase the chance of upgrading items at the Blacksmith. This is not to confuse with the Blacksmith’s overall chance of upgrading that increase with each new level of item. These can also be enhanced by using anti-materials such as the Scroll of Strength and a Jewel of Blessing.

Armor, shields and weapons have an initial Luck value of 40. These items can be enhanced by golden ingots, spined leather, or oak boards (depending on the item's material type) to grant a further +40 Luck, or to increase the Luck of the item up to 140.

Moreover some items, like the Hollow weapon, which is infused with Hollow, can be equipped to boost the damage of any damage-dealing skill by five percent. These items can be purchased in the shops or made using the right ingredients.

Item Failure

Item upgrades are a costly process and not every upgrade will be successful. However, there are some cash shop items that allow players to increase their success rate or prevent themselves from losing an item if the upgrade is unsuccessful.

The rate of success of an upgrade is shown in the Honing UI. The percentage is the probability of successfully upgrading an item. This can be increased by using Additional Materials or Special materials. There are limits to the extent to which the success rates can be improved and the probability of an upgrade failing can't exceed 100%.

The luck of an item can affect the success of an upgrade. Each item has an overall success rate of 25 percent, and each item with Luck increases the chance of success by five percent.

Note that item upgrades are rendered above the items in the inventory which means that enchantment glints and other effects can be obscured by them. If you wish to disable the upgrade overlays, the config option decoration.renderUpgradeOverlays can be set to False in the Item Upgrader CORE client config.
