Item upgrades are a way to boost the stats of an item. Depending on the upgrade type, it may raise an item's Mark level or Rarity and boost additional stats.

Each item comes with a track for upgrading it. Each upgrade increases the cost of the next item by a certain amount.

Item Level

When an item is upgraded, its base stats increase in value. This is the sum of all its leveled up advantages (attack, magic attack and defense). Upgrades can be expensive, depending on who you hire and what you decide to do. This is due to the fact that many perks need to be replaced in order for the item to get upgraded.

Item level is a widely used measure of power, and can be seen on all tooltips of items. It also serves as a gating requirement when queueing for dungeons, scenarios and raids, and to limit the amount of PvP gear that a player can wear (since PvP is restricted to an lower level). The average level of the item can be found in the character sheet.

The level of an item can help players compare the potency of gear when deciding to purchase or sell. It's an indicator of the damage and its quality. The level of the item can be used to evaluate items when examining the inventory of a seller.

On PC, you are able to check the level of the item by pressing ALT or by using the left stick on XB1 or PS4. This will show the full description of the item, including its ilvl. It is also accessible by hovering an item with the mouse cursor, and then typing /itemlevel into chat.

This is more useful for early game runs, since players tend to prioritize the scaling of weapons and defenses over raw damage gains.

Additionally there are certain items, such as the Hollow infused weapon, can be equipped to increase the damage dealt by any damage-dealing skill by five percent. These items can be purchased in the shops or made with the right ingredients.

Item Failure

Upgrades to items are costly and not every upgrade will be successful. However, there are cash shop items that allow players to increase their chance of success or stop themselves from losing an item if the upgrade fails.

When you upgrade an item, the rate of success is displayed in the Honing UI. The percentage represents the likelihood of successfully upgrading the item. This can be increased by using Additional Materials or Special Materials. The chance of success can only be increased by so high, and the probability that the upgrade item will fail cannot exceed 100%..

The luck of an item may influence the effectiveness of an upgrade. Every item has an average success rate of 25% and every item that has Luck increases that chance by five percent.

Note that item upgrades are rendered above the inventory items therefore enchantment glints and other effects can be masked by them. If you wish to disable the upgrade overlays, the config option decoration.renderUpgradeOverlays can be set to False in the Item Upgrader CORE client config.
