They are purchased by players through item upgrader NPCs in exchange for a variety of currencies, and can be found in random treasure lists. The cost of upgrades varies based on the slot of the item and current item level, with weapons costing more than gloves or bracers for instance. For example, once an item reaches the highest level of upgrading for any rank (Explorer, Adventurer, Veteran, Champion, Hero, or Mythic) it won't need Flightstones to be upgraded. This change is designed to allow players to upgrade their gear up to the highest possible ilvl on all their characters, instead of relying only on seasonal loot.

Another important change is that crests only have one use, so it's important to use them properly. For instance, it's a good idea use all of your Whelpling-rank crests on the top equipment you have, and then save Drake and Wyrm crests to use for the next set of upgrades you're planning to create. This is especially relevant for rings and trinkets that take up multiple slots on the character, which can only be eligible to benefit from the discount for all accounts when all of the slots are filled with top-quality equipment.
