How to Replace an audi replacement key fob G28 Engine Speed Sensor

In this video Charles the humble mechanic demonstrates how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. This sensor is located on the outside of the transmission just above the flywheel gear. It sends a signal to the ECU via an uncolored wire (T55/49), then to the tachometer in the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The grey wire is located at the edges of the transmission, just above the flywheel ring. This sensor sends a signal via the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU then uses this information to control the flow of fuel, timig and boost. It also sends an indication to the G5 tachometer inside the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used to connect with the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu must know when the crankshaft is TDC and where the camshaft is so it can start spark and injectors in the right way.

If this sensor fails, the ECU will show the P00160 error, which means the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft are not in sync and possibly indicating chain stretch or a jumped link on the upper chain of timing. The code won't show without the additional information supplied by other sensors (G4 or G40).

It is a little tricky to test because there are various pins on the connector, and each one has different functions. The most effective method to test it is to measure the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. If the sensor is operational, it should be reading about 1000 ohms. If you are having problems with this component, look for signs of coolant or oil in the connector bay.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, while accelerating at full speed from the highway paytoll, I experienced a big cut in power like the engine is out of gas or the injectors aren't firing at all. I pulled out the spark plugs this morning, three were soaked with gasoline and the fourth was unclean. I placed a tissue over each injector hole, and when i start the engine with no sparks, the ones with gazoline jump out. The 4th one stays closed. I tried to test the ground connections of ECU pins 14,30, and 48/55. I got zero ohm. So i assume the problem is somewhere else.

I also tried to reset the PID without success. The car will start if the G28 is disconnected and is running fine when it is connected but it still has the intermittent misfire issue at higher RPM. The temperature sensor for the coolant (G62) shows the wrong temperature value of -49c even when i unplug it. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bar while the actual pressure is zero.

I'm not certain what to do, but i feel i have pretty much eliminated everything else. I'm afraid i may have missed something. If anyone has any suggestions, please let me know! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump in the g28 is activated by a signal from the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter is identical to the G4 and both are used in the 80, 100 200, UrS and audi Key RS2 cars which is why you can easily locate one at a wrecking yard or in a local parts store. Test them out by putting your DMM in resistance mode and take measurements between pins 1 (with the bump on the connector's end up) and 2 (2nd from the left on the black connector's side). They should be infinite ohms.

4. ECU

Our 20vt turbo (3B, AAN, ABY and ADU) engines are equipped with an ECU that needs to know the speed and position of the crankshaft in order to make decisions about timing of the fuel injector, for example. It utilizes a Crank Position Sensor G4 and an Engine Speed Sensor G28 to achieve this. If either of these sensors go wrong, you will receive codes on the diagnostic scanner which could cause engine shut down.

A damaged G28 sensor could cause an inaccurate speed counter for your gearbox and a gearbox which shifts more quickly than normal, and/or a misfire in gear. It is possible that the sensor is failing and requires to be replaced if you encounter any of these symptoms. They're cheap and easy to find, especially if they're a Bosch model like ours. Alternately, GM's version this component is an excellent choice.

5. Tachometer

A malfunctioning engine sensor can cause a myriad of issues in your vehicle. It's a crucial component of the transmission in your replacement audi key fob since it sends information to the ECU about how fast or slowly the engine is spinning. When this sensor fails, it will disrupt the performance of the transmission, as well as the other car key replacement audi's components.

The G5 engine sensor is located at the edge of the transmission, cheapest just above the flywheel ring. It transmits signals via a gray wire to the ECU pin T55/49.
