Lolita's care
Since the 1960s, activists have pleaded for Lolita to stop performing tricks at Miami Seaquarium. They also want her relocated to an open-water pen. Following the 1993 film Free Willy sparked public outrage over the return of orca Keiko into the wild, activists hoped that Lolita would have a similar fate. Unfortunately, she didn't get the chance to return to the ocean.
Lolita's captors - the Dolphin Company - have ignored the advice of a veterinarian and continue to put her in danger. They harm her health by forcing her to perform for tourists, and over-exerting her with head-first dives, which expose her to chlorine, making her lose weight and weakening her immune system. They also keep her in a tank that is one-and-a-half times smaller than her natural habitat.
Fortunately, in 2022, the new owner of Miami Seaquarium pledged to work with a group of Lolita advocates known as Friends of Toki and the Lummi tribe, who consider her an ancestor and plan that would eventually take her to open water. The plan included a sanctuary pen in Washington's westcoast where she could live the remaining days receiving human care and be monitored by scientists. The sanctuary pen was expected to be hundreds of times larger than her Miami home and be surrounded by ocean, not concrete tanks.
If the plan was successful, Lolita (also called Tokitae or Toki) could still be alive. In the wild killer whales are extremely social animals that bond with family members until they die. Lolita has been a captive at Seaquarium for over 40 years. Many activists across the country have called for Lolita's retirement from Seaquarium and eventual release in the wild. These activists include Ric O'Barry, a former Flipper trainer, Empty The Tanks, and Orca Network.

The Miami Seaquarium has released a series of information about Lolita blue & Gold Macaw's health and condition, but questions remain. Akromas and others who have been trained or supervised Lolita's health over time are concerned about her diet. The most recent update on the Friends of Lolita website states that she is eating about 115 pounds of salmon, capelin, herring and squid every day.
The Miami Seaquarium has been criticized for the quality of the food they offer their killer whales, specifically Lolita. The 57-year-old orca was rescued from Puget Sound in 1970, and while the species is threatened in the wild, she lives in an aquarium that some claim is too small for her.
Lolita's Health
Lolita is beautiful, but her health is declining. She has been a source of concern for animal welfare groups that wish to see her released to the wild. Lolita has been a resident at the Miami Seaquarium since 1970 and performed as a tourist attraction for decades. She has battled chronic illnesses and an infection that has left in a fragile condition.
The Dolphin Company, which now owns the Miami Seaquarium and is owned by the Dolphin Company has not provided any information regarding the condition of Lolita. However, the non-profit group Friends of Toki has provided monthly updates on her health and well-being on their website. These updates indicate that Toki is ageing rapidly and her health has declined.
Since her captor doesn't need to reveal this information, it is unclear which specific health issues the orca is suffering from. The Orca Project created a repository of necropsies collected from Sea World. This shows that kidney disease is often an integral part in the deaths of captive orcas.
Despite the ongoing health issues, many are hopeful that Lolita could be closer to a life in the wild than ever before. The new owner of the Seaquarium has expressed a commitment to moving the whale out of her tank and into her home waters in the Pacific.
The move comes after years of public pressure as well as from PETA and PETA, to have the Miami Seaquarium release Lolita into an ocean-side sanctuary where she can swim in the ocean and perhaps even reunite with the orca thought to be her mother. Unfortunately the plans came too late for the beloved whale who passed away on Friday due to what was believed to be a kidney issue.
