Item upgrades are a way to increase the stats of an item. Based on the type of upgrade, it can increase the rarity of an item or mark Level and boost additional stats.

The possible stat ranges for an item are determined by the level of the item, however all items are guaranteed to have at least 1 stat within the specified range, unless it's an item that is unique or an item that is a God roll from a boss of a raid.

This is another aspect that could be altered by adding the option to upgrade the equipment without rerolling the affixes, or selecting which stats to increase. But as with base equipment, this would have to be performed on a per-item basis, and the item compare interface would not display all the possible stats that were gained or lost at the same time.

Item Luck

A player's Luck stat stacks up to increase the odds of finding items as well as the properties that appear on loot drops and the intensity of these properties. However, it doesn't directly impact damage or the ability to upgrade items. It merely gives players the possibility to obtain better equipment earlier in the game and is thus more useful in the early game as opposed to later ones, because most players value higher weapon scaling and defenses over damage gains.

Luck can also increase the chance of upgrading items at the Blacksmith. This isn't to be confused with the Blacksmith’s overall upgrade chances that increase with each level of the Best item upgrader. They can also be increased by using anti-materials like the Scroll of Strength and a Jewel of Blessing.

Weapons, shields, and armor can be created or spawned by using the Luck property, which has a default value of 40. These items can be improved by using golden ingots or spined leather (depending on the material they are made of) for a further +40 luck or to boost the luck of the item to 140.

Additionally there are certain items, like the Hollow weapon, which is infused with Hollow can be outfitted to boost the damage of any damage-dealing skill by five percent. These items are available in the shop or crafted by using the appropriate ingredients.

Item Failure

Not all upgrades work. Cash shop items can be used to boost the success rate of an upgrade, or to protect players from losing their item in the event that it fails.

When you upgrade an item the rate of success is displayed in the Honing UI. The percentage represents the chance of successfully upgrading the item and can be increased by adding Additional Materials or Special Materials. The probability of success can only be increased so much, and the chance that the upgrade will fail cannot exceed 100%.

The luck of an item may affect the effectiveness of an upgrade. Every item has a success rate of 25 percent, and each item that has Luck increases the chance of success by five percent.

The item upgrade overlays are rendered above items in the inventory. This can block enchantment effects as well as other effects. If you wish to disable the upgrade overlays, the config option decoration.renderUpgradeOverlays can be set to False in the Item Upgrader CORE client config.
