Upgrades increase the value of certain numeric statistics on armor, weapons and rings. Upgrades also boost bonuses like Crit chance and damage from PvE.

The cost for upgrading items increases when they reach the item's current level. The cost increases with the item's level.

Components

Upgrade components are items that can be slotted into armor, weapons and trinkets to give an additional stat boost or impact while they're being used. They can be acquired through crafting, purchasing from vendors trading or looting. Some upgrades have special cosmetic effects.

Upgrade components can be placed in equipment that has a slot for them; the item must be at a minimum upgraded to blue level for a component to be applied. Unlike other mods, upgrade components can only be used one time; they cannot be applied multiple times or replaced with new upgrades. Infusions and enrichments are a type of upgrade component that can be used to upgrade non-amulet legendary or Ascended equipment, as well as some non-ascended items. Infusions and Enrichments can be obtained by salvaging equipment that is ascended or by completing a mission within the Prophecies, Factions, and Nightfall campaigns.

An upgrade can have a prefix or suffix, modifying the name of the equipment to which it is applied (for example "Canthan Armor Insignia" becomes Canthan Armor of Minor Vigor). Some upgrades increase an item's Mark Level or Rarity, which allows players to make stronger versions of the equipment that require fewer Upgrade Crystals than is required to reach the same level of upgrade using normal methods.

A 'boost' upgrade can change the attack or defence characteristics of the weapon or armor. These upgrades are available to be crafted from the Portative Forging Station once the player completes the cutscene and defeats the Crazed mechanic. These upgrades can be purchased by purchasing them in the cash shop, or by collecting them from enemies when upgrading other gear.

The player can get a maximum of five boost upgrades at one time; each upgrade increases the chance that a better-quality version of the item upgrader will drop during the next reset. This gives the player an incentive to keep improving their equipment even if they're uncertain of the extent to which it will improve following a subsequent reset.

If a boost upgrade is successful or not, the process could be costly, and there is a significant risk that the item may be obsolete or even break if it fails; a failure to upgrade can ruin the Upgrade Crystals and Assist Powder as well as the upgraded item. Cash shop items can be used to minimize or eliminate the possibility of failure. Some upgrades also offer a bonus if reinserted.

Glyphs

Glyphs are upgrade components that can be placed in special sockets on the Paragon Board. Glyphs increase the power of all nodes in a radius around them and include pre-existing affixes to equipment. Glyphs can be upgraded in a variety of ways, and we suggest getting them up to level 15 as soon as possible.

You'll often see in the endgame that putting Glyphs is the best method to upgrade your equipment. These are the only upgrade components that can be upgraded up to level 15 and give a significant boost to your power on the Paragon Board.

Most of the upgrades in the game can be replaced, however Glyphs are the one upgrade component that can be removed and replaced without restrictions. Only legendary equipment can be salvaged and rebuilt by using a Black Lion Salvage Kit.

Each Glyph has a certain range of values that can enhance a stat by. The value is displayed when you choose the Glyph in your inventory. You can replace it with another Glyph of the same rank or a higher rank, which will increase the overall value of the Glyph.

There are Glyphs in the Black Lion Trading Post, as part of a Gem Store purchase or bundle with certain gathering tools that are unlimited-use and also through Faction Crypt raids. Each Faction Crypt has the chance of dropping one of the numerous Glyphs as well as some rare glyphs to be found in the form of drops from any of the four Faction Crypts.

When an individual player upgrades an item it is replaced by a new item. The same armor can be transformed into an weapon or shield when upgraded. The new item will have its own set bonus. This could be a problem in that it could make the item more expensive if you don't require it.

Item upgrades can sometimes be rerolled if the player has enough reroll tokens in order to do this. The item will be replaced with a brand new one that has a base of level 1 and completely different bonuses. This is a good idea, but should not be used frequently as it can waste resources.

Certain upgrades can boost their value, allowing players to customize their gear. Dolphin's Gift is a good example, as it provides an increase in power if the player repeatedly enters or leaves the water. It is possible to upgrade it several times, each time increasing the max roll by a factor of 10. In addition to the upgrade cost mentioned above, each equipment upgrade requires an individual amount of ingredients needed to upgrade.
