Upgrades can boost the value of certain numeric stats on weapons, armor and rings. Upgrades also increase bonuses such as crit chance and PvE Damage.

For example an item with the upgrade template that is ending in % will take on an attack damage of 3% each time it upgrades (relative to its previous value).

Components

Upgrade components can be added to trinkets, weapons and armor to give them a stat boost or add a bonus effect. These can be obtained by crafting, buying from vendors, trading with other players or looting. Certain upgrades have unique cosmetic effects.

Upgrade components can only be used on equipment with a slot. The item must be upgraded to blue before the component can be applied. An upgrade can include a suffix or prefix that alters the name of the equipment with which it is applied (for instance "Canthan Armor Insignia' becomes Canthan Armor of Minor Vigor). Certain upgrades boost the Mark Level or Rarity, allowing players create stronger versions of the equipment using the smallest amount of Upgrade Crystals than would be required to achieve the same upgrade level through normal methods.

A boost upgrade can change the attack or defense attributes of a weapon, or armor. After the player has completed the cutscene and defeated the Crazed Mechanist the upgrades can be created at the Portative Forging Station. These upgrades can be purchased by purchasing them from the cash shop or by obtaining them from enemies when upgrading other equipment.

Each upgrade increases the probability that a higher-tier version of an item will be dropped during the next reset. This gives players the opportunity to upgrade their equipment even if they are unsure what can be improved upon an update.

The process of upgrading an item can be costly and it's possible that the item will become obsolete, or even break, if the upgrade is unsuccessful. Upgrade Crystals and assist powders are also destroyed when an upgrade fails. Cash shop items can be used to minimize or eliminate the risk of failure. Glyphs are upgrade components that can be placed in special sockets on the Paragon Board. Glyphs boost the power of nodes within a radius, including any pre-existing attaches. Glyphs can be upgraded in a variety of ways. We recommend upgrading them as fast as possible up to 15 levels.

You'll often see in the endgame that placing Glyphs is the Best item upgrade way to upgrade your gear. These are the only upgrade components which can be upgraded to level 15 and provide significant boosts to your power on the Paragon Board.

Glyphs, the only upgrade component which can be removed without restriction and then replaced with no restrictions are the most popular. Only legendary equipment can be salvaged and replaced using a Black Lion Salvage Kit.

The value of each Glyph is displayed when you select it from your inventory. You can replace it with a Glyph that is of the same or higher rank to boost the value of the Glyph.

Glyphs are available in the Black Lion Trading Post as part of the Gem Store bundle or purchase the glyphs with certain tools that allow unlimited use as well as during Faction Crypt Raids. Each Faction Crypt has the possibility of dropping one of the many Glyphs as well as some rare glyphs to be found as drops from any of the four Faction Crypts.

When you have the desired Glyphs, you will have to put them on your equipment. Each Glyph will grant a distinct bonus that boosts a particular set of stat nodes that are within a radius of the Glyph. Leveling

Every upgradeable item has an amount, which determines its final upgraded stats. Upgraded items can be leveled up to a maximum of 385. Each level of an item requires a different amount of components, and the upgrade costs increase as the item gets advanced in level.

Certain upgrades require an ingredient to be activated. This ingredient can be obtained by completing Upgrade Recipes. These recipes can be found in the upgrade items tab of a crafting table or bought from NPCs. Each Upgrade Recipe completed results in a certain amount of Technology points. These points can be used to level the item upgrader, and when enough points have been earned, the upgrade will be claimed and the additional bonuses will be added to the item.

When a player improves the equipment they have the original item will be replaced with the new item. The same armor can be transformed into the form of a weapon or shield when upgraded. The new item will come with a bonus of its own. This can be a downside since the item may be more expensive even if you don't require it.

If the player has enough tokens they can roll the upgrade of their item. This causes the item to be traded for a new one, with an initial level and a different set of bonus bonuses. This can be useful, but shouldn't be done often as it can be a waste of resources.

Failures will result in the item reverting to its original state and the player having to pay for more items than if they stopped upgrading after the maximum number.

If an item isn't upgraded the experience bar on its growth bar will reset to zero. The item will also lose any bonuses it gained, such as crit chance damage to attack, other effects (such as increased heal over time, or the speed of reloading). The player is able to use their weapon or armor even after the failure.

When an item is upgraded, the upgrades are applied in order from the lowest to the highest. This means that if a weapon receives a crit chance boost it will be applied prior to any damage from attacks increases.
