Upgrades give you boost in specific stats. Each upgrade boosts the item Level Upgrade level by +3. A random substat is also added to every upgrade.

The upgraded gear typically has a higher trade value regardless of whether it has low requirements (like the FB shield of the sorc) or very high stat variation (like eth titan weapons). Upgrades are less valuable for those with lower requirements due to the requirement to roll the perfect version.

Recycle Points

The item upgrader allows players to upgrade their gear to a higher level by supplying the appropriate currency to the NPC. Upgrades can be applied to any kind of weapon or armor. The item used to upgrade the item is discarded and cannot be used again. Upgrades can also be applied to enhancements.

The upgrader is located in all major cities, and can be accessed at any time to upgrade your gear. It is recommended that you visit the upgrader at least once every few weeks to keep your equipment up to date.

Valorstones

Upgrades are items that can be used for tools, armor, weapon and accessory upgrades. They are purchased by players through item upgrader NPCs in exchange for different currencies, and can also be found in random treasure lists. Once an upgrade has been purchased, it can be applied to any weapon, tool, or armor with a button, which displays an image of the Best item upgrader at its next upgrade level if the player has sufficient materials.

Upgrade costs differ based on the slot for the item and the current item level. For instance weapons are more expensive than bracers, or gloves. Each upgrade costs 15 Flightstones plus a set number of crests. Some upgrades offer a discount on the Flightstones. Once an item is upgraded to a certain amount it is able to be downgraded and sold to the upgrader at a lower price.

Many locations have upgraders for their items which include the main island and a few outposts. The NPCs provide both an upgrade discount and a chance to get a brand new upgrade recipe. The discount for upgrading increases when more items are upgraded. It can be increased if players complete certain achievements or quests.

Contrary to Cromwell in Baldur's Gate II is no item upgrader available in the beginning of Icewind Dale. The NPCs who can facilitate upgrades are available only through a variety of methods. This is both a positive and an issue.

In Season 3, a number of new features have been added to the upgrade system. Once an upgrade has been completed to a certain level of item for an armor slot upgrading other items to the same level will cost less. This is regardless of whether the items are from another set of gear.

The amount of Valorstones required for upgrades is decreased, and the discount is account-wide. Similarly, the amount of Harbinger Crests required for upgrades is also reduced and is not available until players reach certain milestones in their achievements.

Crests

For instance, once an item is at the highest level of upgrade for any rank (Explorer, Adventurer, Veteran, Champion, Hero, or Mythic) it won't need Flightstones to be upgraded. This change allows players to upgrade their equipment to the highest possible ilvl for all their characters rather than relying on seasonal loot.

It's also essential to use crests in a wise manner, as they are only used for one purpose. For instance it's Best item upgrade to use all of your Whelpling-rank crests on the Best item upgrader equipment you have and then keep Drake and Wyrm crests for the next batch of upgrades you're planning on making. This is especially true for items like trinkets and rings that occupy multiple slots on the character which can only be eligible to take advantage of the account-wide discount if all of the slots are filled with top-quality gear.
