World of Warcraft Item Upgrades

Item upgrades are a way to boost the stats of an item. Depending on the upgrade type, it may raise an item's Mark level or Rarity and boost additional stats.

Upgrading gear in The War Within requires a set number of Flightstones and Crests, and each item has an upgrade track. Each upgrade increases the cost of the next one by a set amount.

Item Level

The value of an item's basic stats increases as it is upgraded. The value is the sum of all its leveled up benefits (attack magic attack, attack defense). Upgrades can be expensive, depending on who you hire and what you decide to do. This is due to the variety of perks that have to be modified to upgrade an item.

Item level is a widely used measurement of power and can be seen on all tooltips of items. It can also be used as a gating requirement when waiting to queue for dungeons and raids and scenarios, and to limit the amount of PvP gear that a player can wear (since PvP is restricted to an lower level). The average item level is listed on the character sheet.

When deciding whether to purchase or sell equipment, players can compare the item level. It's a sign of the item's damage and quality. The level of an item can be used to compare items when looking at the inventory of a seller.

On PC, you are able to view the item level using ALT, or by using the left stick on XB1 or PS4. This will display the full item description, including its value. You can also locate it by hovering over an item and typing /itemlevel in chat.

There are various theories about how the item level calculation is carried out. One theory states that the level of an item is calculated using a formula that calculates the worth of the stats of an item really are. It takes into consideration the fact that various perks have different value and gems in sockets increase the item's overall value. This can result in a calculated value for the item's level, which is usually quite close to the actual Blizzard level of the item.

However, this isn't the only factor that determines the ilvl of an item, because the size of the area the item dropped in can change the value of its stats, for example by adding an amount to its crit rating or haste rating. Items dropped in higher-level instances will have a higher ilvl.

Item Stats

The stats of an item can determine the fate of an item for players. The game uses a variety of them in a variety of ways to encourage players to use multiple weapons, and to prevent one weapon from being "the Best item upgrade." The stat mods on an weapon increase the base stats. These stat mods are then enhanced by a player's level.

Upgrades to the item add by increasing certain stats on the item. The rarity of an item determines the cost of upgrading. For instance, a grey or white item will only be upgraded once, whereas items with rare levels will be upgraded multiple times with higher prices.

Another way to change the stats of an item is by affixing it. These are special stat boosts that can be added to an item by the player and come in a variety of sizes and shapes. The affixes could provide the item extra damage, or give a specific capability to the item (such as reviving dead or decreasing cooldowns) or make the item unique by adding a special name to the item.

All affixes are re-rolled at the moment by selecting them in the upgrade window, pressing the green button. This process will cost the player a specific amount of gold as well as items which can be added to the upgrade gauge in the same manner as other options for rerolling.

Players can choose to upgrade an item with specific stats, or reroll attaches. The range of stats is determined by the item's level. However every item will have at least one stat within that range unless they are an exclusive item or the item is a God Roll from a raid boss.

This is another thing that can be modified by adding an option to upgrade the equipment without rolling the affixes or choosing which stats to increase. However, as with the base equipment, this would have to be carried out on a per-item level, and the interface for comparing items wouldn't show all possible stats either lost or gained at the same time.

Item Luck

The Luck stat of a player stacks up to increase the likelihood of finding items and the properties that are spawned from loot drops and the intensity of these properties. It doesn't, however directly affect damage or the ability to upgrade items. It gives the player the chance to upgrade their equipment earlier in the game. This is particularly beneficial in early game runs since players tend to prioritize weapon scaling and defenses above raw damage gains.

In addition to influencing the discovery of items, Luck also increases the chances of success when upgrading items with the Blacksmith. This is not to confuse with the Blacksmith's overall chance of upgrading, which increase with each item upgrader kit level. They can also be enhanced by using anti-materials such as a Scroll of Strength and a Jewel of Blessing.

Weapons, shields, and armor can be made or spawn with the Luck property, with an initial value of 40. These items can be enhanced with golden ingots or spined leather (depending on their material type) for a further +40 luck or to boost the Luck of an item up to 140.

Furthermore some items, such as the Hollow weapon that is infused with hollow, can be equipped to increase the damage dealt by any damage-dealing skill by 5percent. These items can be purchased in the shop or crafted with the right ingredients.

Item Failure

Not all upgrades are successful. However, there are some cash shop items that allow players to boost their chances of success or even prevent themselves from losing an item if the upgrade is unsuccessful.

The rate of success of an upgrade is displayed in the Honing UI. The percentage is the probability of successfully upgrading the item. This can be increased with Additional Materials or Special materials. The percentage of success can only be increased so much, and the chance that the upgrade will fail cannot be greater than 100%..

The success of an item upgrades is also influenced by the Luck of that item. Each item upgrading has an initial success rate of 25% and every item with Luck increases that chance by 5percent.

It is important to note that upgrade items are rendered above the items in the inventory which means that enchantment glints and other effects could be masked by them. If you wish to disable the upgrade overlays, the config option decoration.renderUpgradeOverlays can be set to False in the Item Upgrader CORE client config.
