With an elegant circular design that appears more like a regular Roomba than the competitors' compact models, this robot vacuum and mop combo is one of the most attractive looking models in our tests. The latest flagship model from iRobot is also the most intelligent. It comes with advanced features such as Enhanced Dirt Detection and future compatibility (another company's robot that is able to wash mop pads autonomously).
It's the only robotic mop or vacuum that has a perfect 10 in our tests, thanks to a combination of high-tech sensors, which include a camera, structured light system and multiple lasers. The X40 Ultra is also the only robot we tested that can fully autonomously refill and empty its base station and it has an its own self-cleaning mop pads.
Like other iRobot models, the X40 is easy to use, offering a simple mobile app interface as well as integration with Amazon Alexa, Apple HomeKit as well as Google Assistant. The only downside is that the X40 still a noisy unit. This can be a problem in the mornings prior to work or at night when you're trying to fall asleep.
It's also a bit costly but not as much as the Ecovacs MaxV Ultra or the Roborock S8 Omni, which are both equally impressive and attractive. This is a two-in-one vacuum that's very capable however it's more expensive and produce more noise.

It also has a front-mounted camera for real-time detection of hazards but this was not foolproof in our testing and was often confused by power cords or other obstructions.
The vacuum cleaner has a maximum suction of 7,000 Pascals which is more than sufficient to do the job. It also comes with an option known as "Intelligent Dirt Detection", that regulates the power of the vacuum and adjusts cleaning frequency for different areas in the house based on how dirty these areas tend to be.
For larger homes it's worth looking for models with spot or zone cleaning modes that allow you to instruct the robot to clean one specific area of your home via the app or via voice commands. If you have a lot of furniture, a stairway mode is also useful. Also a recharge and resume feature that allows your robot autonomous vacuum to pick up right where it left off is great for busy families.
iRobot RX3
The RX3 is a smarter cleaner than you'd expect from its price tag. It is a good vacuum cleaner and picked up 55% debris in our tests. (It was only second to the Roomba Q5 Pro). It also mopses using only one pad and a reciprocating motion that is more efficient than most mop cleaners for robots that we've examined. And it's highly self-sufficient with a full-featured app and an auto-emptying washable base.
The well-designed iRobot app will guide you through an initial mapping run that gathers information about your floorplan and any "no-go" areas you have marked on the map. It can be used to create cleaning schedules or organize the spot-cleaning. It can also be used to it to rank your most filthy areas for greater efficiency. The app has a range of options, including seasonal suggestions, custom mapping and advanced cleaning settings.
