A highly skilled consultant psychiatrist will conduct a thorough evaluation of your ADHD. This includes a thorough medical history and an assessment using the typical ADHD questionnaires and rating scales.
After your evaluation, you will be advised that medication may be beneficial in your case. This will be discussed at your follow-up appointment (which may be scheduled in person, by video link or by phone). Your doctor will go over the different options for medication available. If you decide to start medication, we will offer you the opportunity to increase your dosage to optimize the benefits/side-effects balance for you.
This process could take several weeks, and requires gradually altering your child’s medication until the right balance is achieved. It is not unusual to need to titrate three or four medications before finding the best one for your child's ADHD symptoms. Parents must be involved in this titration process and keep a close eye on their child's behaviour to inform the doctor whether the medication is working or causing adverse effects.
If you decide to return to NHS treatment you will be issued a private prescription for your medication. You will be required to pay at the pharmacy. This is not included in the consultation fee. You'll be required to attend regular appointments every six months to monitor your medication. This includes blood pressure and pulse readings. Annual reviews are also required.
Follow-up appointments
Once the assessment is completed, you can schedule follow-up appointments with your psychiatrist. Typically, the appointment will take place on zoom video call but in certain circumstances it might be possible to schedule an audio-only consultation (again at an extra cost).
At this point, we will discuss treatment options and come up with a unique ADHD medication titration strategy. This will include a review and discussion of your dosage of medication and any adverse effects you may be experiencing. The titration sessions cost PS150 for face-to-face sessions and PS60 via video or telephone consultation. Medication costs are additional and are paid directly to the pharmacy.
The psychiatrist will ask you questions regarding your family history, the impact of your ADHD symptoms on your life and any mental health issues that you might be suffering from. This is due to the fact that ADHD can be a genetic condition and it is important to look into any family history that may indicate that you're at risk of developing the disorder.
During the assessment, it is essential that you are honest and honest with your doctor who will be using the information you provide to determine if you are able to meet the diagnostic criteria for ADHD. This is a crucial step because a wrong diagnosis could result in an inappropriate prescription of medication.
If you've decided that you would like to receive treatment for your ADHD, we will then schedule a follow-up appointment with one of our psychiatrists that specialize in this area. This can be done at the time of your diagnosis if you are keen to begin treatment right away or within two weeks if would like more time to think about the implications of your diagnosis and the possibilities that are available to you.
If you're not sure which one you prefer it is recommended that you speak with your GP prior to scheduling your private appointment as certain providers have different rules regarding whether they require a GP referral letter or not. Make sure that your GP accepts a Shared Care Agreement, which means you will be referred to them after you leave the clinic for prescriptions for medication.
Medication
For many people who seek a private diagnosis of ADHD, medication is an important part of their journey. Getting prescriptions from an NHS psychiatrist can be difficult and lengthy. NHS waiting lists can be extremely long and GPs might be reluctant to refer patients to specialist services.
One method to circumvent this is to ask your GP to refer you through Right to Choose (see psychiatry-uk and ADHD 360). This means that you can select a provider that offers a private assessment and titration adhd medication. This will help you save time and be more convenient, particularly if you have a busy work schedule.
After you have been diagnosed, your doctor will assess your condition to determine if you need medication titration. You'll need to complete forms that vary by doctor however the most commonly used ones are self-reporting questions and medical histories going to childhood and adulthood. These will help your clinician identify any conditions that could mean you shouldn't take ADHD medications if they are prescribed.
If you are being titrated on medication, this will usually consist of stimulants and non-stimulant drugs. They will be tested and monitored to find the best combination for you. The titration procedure can be long and may require multiple appointments before you are stable.
The frequency of your follow-up appointments will depend on the type and amount of medication you're taking. They can be monthly or quarterly. This will include your physician making sure that you are taking the correct medication, noting any adverse effects you've experienced, and making any adjustments needed to ensure that you remain on a dose that is safe. You will be required to go to an annual review and a routine health examination which includes blood pressure, pulse, and weight measurements.
Some people may be satisfied with their medication and therefore do not need to discuss their titration process further. If, however, they require further discussion about the titration process and treatment plan, it is possible that they will be passed back to the same private clinic that performed their initial assessment. If this occurs, the titration consultation will be included in the consultation fees and they will be given their medication on private prescription (see Consultation fees above). It could cost more than an NHS prescription since the pharmacy will charge for the medication.
