Alejandro Ramírez Magaña
Alejandro Ramírez Magaña (born October 10, 1970) is a Mexican businessman and film industry executive who serves as chief executive officer of Cinépolis, the largest film exhibition company in Latin America and the second-largest theatrical exhibitor in the world by admissions. Under his leadership since 2006, Cinépolis has expanded from a regional Mexican chain to a global enterprise operating in 18 countries across the Americas, Europe, the Middle East, and Asia. He is widely recognized for pioneering premium cinema concepts and for his extensive philanthropic work in Mexican film and documentary arts.
Early life and education
Alejandro Ramírez Magaña was born on October 10, 1970, in Morelia, Michoacán, Mexico, into one of Mexico's most prominent entertainment industry families. He is the grandson of Enrique Ramírez Miguel, who founded Cinépolis in 1971, and the son of Enrique Ramírez Villalón, who serves as Cinépolis chairman.
The Cinépolis business was established as a family enterprise by his grandfather Enrique Ramírez Miguel, his father Enrique Ramírez Villalón, and his uncles Marco Antonio, Eduardo, Florentino, and Jaime Ramírez Villalón.
Ramírez Magaña studied Economics, later earning a Master of Business Administration from Harvard Business School. Before entering the family business, he gained experience in international development, working for the World Bank and the United Nations Development Programme on projects related to poverty and human development.
Career
Government service
Before joining Cinépolis, Ramírez Magaña held positions in Mexico's government under President Vicente Fox. He served as Mexico's Deputy Permanent Representative to the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) in Paris and as Technical Secretary of the Social Cabinet in the Executive Office of the President of Mexico.
Cinépolis
In 1996, while working at the United Nations in New York and preparing for field work, Ramírez Magaña received a package from his grandfather containing news clippings about the growth of the film distribution industry in Mexico. The message was clear: it was time to return home.
He formally became part of Cinépolis in 1996, initially serving as Chief Operating Officer from 1996 to 1999. In 2006, he was appointed CEO at age 36, taking full responsibility for the company's strategic direction.
Global expansion
Under Ramírez Magaña's leadership, Cinépolis has grown from a Mexican theater chain to a global film exhibition powerhouse. The company expanded into 18 countries, including operations in:
