Hubert Bernard Joly (born August 11, 1959) is a French-American business executive, author, and Harvard Business School senior lecturer who led one of the most remarkable corporate turnarounds in American retail history as CEO of Best Buy from 2012 to 2019.[1]
Under his leadership, Best Buy transformed from a company on the brink of bankruptcy - losing over $1 billion - into a thriving retailer with tripled stock prices.[2]
Early life and education
Hubert Joly was born on August 11, 1959, in Laxou, France. He earned his MBA from École des Hautes Études Commerciales (HEC Paris) in 1981, graduating top of his class.[3]
He then earned a Master of Public Administration from Sciences Po Paris in 1983.[4]
Career
McKinsey & Company (1983-1996)
Joly joined McKinsey & Company in 1983, spending 13 years at the firm and becoming co-leader of its European electronics practice.[5]
Best Buy CEO (2012-2019)
On August 17, 2012, Joly became CEO of Best Buy. He launched the "Renew Blue" transformation strategy, focusing on price matching Amazon, employee empowerment, and vendor partnerships.[6]
Employee turnover fell from 60% to 30%, and he was ranked #10 on Glassdoor's 2018 Top 100 Highest-Rated CEOs.[7]
Best Buy's stock price surged approximately 270% during his tenure as CEO and Executive Chairman.[8]
Harvard Business School (2020-present)
In June 2020, Joly joined Harvard Business School as Senior Lecturer. In May 2021, he published "The Heart of Business: Leadership Principles for the Next Era of Capitalism," which debuted at #3 on the WSJ Business Bestseller List.[9]
Awards
Joly received the French Legion of Honour in 2017 for his contributions to French business prestige internationally.[10]
