Michael K. "Mike" Wirth (born October 15, 1960) is an American businessman serving as chairman and chief executive officer of Chevron Corporation, one of the world's largest integrated energy companies with approximately $246 billion in annual revenue.[1] Since assuming leadership in February 2018, Wirth has navigated Chevron through volatile oil markets, the COVID-19 demand collapse, and rising climate activism.[2]

Born and raised in Golden, Colorado, Wirth spent his entire 40+ year career at Chevron after joining as a design engineer in 1982.[3]

Early life and education

Michael K. Wirth was born on October 15, 1960, in Golden, Colorado. He attended Golden High School and played football and basketball.[4]

He attended the University of Colorado Boulder, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical Engineering in 1982.[5]

Career

Early Chevron career (1982-2006)

Wirth joined Chevron in 1982 as a design engineer working on refining operations. Over two decades, he held increasingly senior roles in refining, marketing, and supply chain across Asia, the Middle East, and the Americas.[6]

In 2001, Wirth became president of Marketing for Chevron's Asia/Middle East/Africa business based in Singapore. From 2003 to 2006, he served as president of Global Supply and Trading.[7]

Executive Vice President (2006-2016)

In 2006, Wirth was promoted to Executive Vice President of Downstream & Chemicals, overseeing Chevron's global refining, marketing, and petrochemicals operations.[8]

Chairman and CEO (2018-present)

Wirth became Chevron's Chairman and CEO on February 1, 2018, succeeding John Watson.[9]

His strategy has emphasized capital discipline, Permian Basin focus, and shareholder returns.[10]

Major acquisitions under Wirth's leadership include Noble Energy (2020, $5 billion) and the proposed Hess acquisition ($53 billion).[11]

Controversies

Wirth has been labeled a "climate criminal" by environmental activists who argue Chevron has obstructed climate action.[12]

His 2023 compensation exceeded $26 million, drawing criticism from corporate governance groups.[13]

Personal life

Wirth is married and has children. The family owns properties in California including residences in Huntington Beach and the San Francisco Bay Area.[14]
