It also doesn't come with a camera to look around corners.
However, it's a good choice to consider, particularly if you're looking to save money on a Roomba from iRobot and have a mostly bare-floor home or office. With a sleek, circular design that looks more like a normal Roomba than the competitors' boxes This robot vacuum and mop combo is one of the most attractive looking models in our tests. iRobot's latest flagship model also is its most advanced model, with features that are cutting-edge like enhanced dirt detection technology and future compatibility with Matter (another company's robot that is able to wash mop pads).
It's the only robot vacuum/mop that scored an exemplary 10/10 in our tests, thanks to a combination of high-tech sensors, including a camera, structured light system and multiple lasers. The X40 Ultra was the only robot we tested that could fill and empty its basestation autonomously. It also boasted an industry-leading suction of 12,000Pa and self-cleaning mop mops.
The X40 is, like the other iRobot products, is simple to operate. It comes with a simple mobile app interface that is compatible with Amazon Alexa and Apple HomeKit. The only real drawback is that it's an eerily noisy device that could be a problem if you run it in the morning before work or in the evening as you try to fall asleep.
It's also a bit costly however, not as expensive as the Ecovacs MaxV Ultra or Roborock S8 Omni, which are equally powerful and more attractive. This is a two-in-one vacuum that's extremely powerful, but it's going to cost you more and make more noise.
iRobot L20 Ultra
The L20 Ultra is a top-of-the-range robot vacuum and mop with a lot of advanced features to help you forget about your chores. Like Ecovacs range-topping X2 Omni and Roborock's S8 Pro Ultra, the L20 is designed to be a hands-free cleaning machine that takes care of both mopping and vacuuming, with a multi-function dock that automatically empty the vacuum's dust bin, fills its water tank, cleans and dry its mop pads.
The smart robot uses the combination of LIDAR and structured light to draw out floor plans and spot obstacles, making it more efficient than its top rivals. It also comes with a front-mounted camera that can detect hazards in real-time however this was not foolproof in our tests and was often confused with obstructions or power cords.
Its vacuum has a high suction maximum of 7,000 Pascals which is more than enough to get the job done. It also has an option known as "Intelligent Dirt Detection", that regulates the vacuum's power and adjusts cleaning frequency for various areas of the home based on how dirty those areas are.
