Rohan Oza
Rohan Oza (born October 2, 1971) is a Zambian-born American entrepreneur, investor, and marketing executive known as the "Hollywood Brandfather" for his pioneering work in celebrity branding and equity partnerships. He is the co-founder and Managing Partner of CAVU Venture Partners, a consumer-focused investment firm, and formerly served as Chief Marketing Officer of Glacéau (Vitaminwater, Smartwater) and The Coca-Cola Company's still beverages division.
Oza is credited with revolutionizing celebrity endorsement deals by offering stars equity stakes rather than traditional fees, a strategy that proved spectacularly successful when Coca-Cola acquired Glacéau for $4.1 billion in 2007. His partnerships have included 50 Cent, Jennifer Aniston, Justin Timberlake, Beyoncé, Madonna, and numerous other celebrities. He appeared as a guest "Shark" investor on seasons 9, 10, and 11 of the ABC reality television series Shark Tank (2017-2020).
His most notable Shark Tank investment, in the prebiotic soda company Poppi, resulted in a $1.95 billion acquisition by PepsiCo in March 2025, making it one of the most successful deals in the show's history.
Early life and education
Rohan Oza was born on October 2, 1971, in Livingstone, Zambia, to an ethnic Gujarati Indian family with a multi-generational entrepreneurial heritage. His father, Ashok Oza, was a businessman, and his mother, Nima Oza, was a teacher. He has a sister named Shefali.
Oza's family background instilled in him a strong appreciation for risk-taking and commerce. His grandfather and great-grandfather had migrated from India to Africa, with his grandfather settling in Zimbabwe approximately 110 years ago. This blend of African spontaneity and Indian discipline shaped his upbringing.
At age 13, Oza was sent to Harrow School, the prestigious English public school, where he excelled in cricket. He subsequently attended the University of Nottingham, where he studied manufacturing and industrial engineering, before pivoting to marketing and corporate strategy while earning his MBA at the University of Michigan. Oza immigrated to the United States in 1995 after completing his graduate studies.
Career
Mars and early career
Oza's first job after university was running the production line for M&M's at Mars in Slough, United Kingdom. Within months, he convinced the company to move him into European Snickers advertising, demonstrating the marketing instincts that would define his career.
Coca-Cola (1996-2002)
In 1996, Oza joined The Coca-Cola Company in Atlanta as a marketing manager. At Coca-Cola, he quickly made his mark by revitalizing the Sprite brand, targeting younger demographics and signing then-unknown basketball player Kobe Bryant as a spokesperson.
He also took charge of the Powerade brand, securing endorsements from prominent athletes including LeBron James, Andy Roddick, and Michael Vick. Under his leadership, Powerade achieved over 35% sales growth in 2002 through packaging redesigns and strategic athlete partnerships.
Glacéau and Vitaminwater (2002-2009)
In 2002, Oza left Coca-Cola to become partner and Chief Marketing Officer of Glacéau, then a fledgling beverage company producing Vitaminwater and Smartwater. This move would prove to be the defining chapter of his career.
At Glacéau, Oza pioneered a revolutionary approach to celebrity marketing: instead of paying endorsement fees, he offered celebrities equity stakes in the company. This strategy aligned the celebrities' interests with the brand's success and proved far more effective than traditional sponsorship deals.
His most famous partnership was with rapper 50 Cent in 2004. Oza created a grape-flavored variant called "Formula 50" and gave the rapper an ownership stake in the brand. When Coca-Cola acquired Glacéau for $4.1 billion in 2007, 50 Cent reportedly earned over $100 million from the deal.
Under Oza's marketing leadership, Vitaminwater's revenue grew from $25 million to $700 million annually between 2002 and 2007. Additional celebrity partners included Jennifer Aniston, LeBron James, Tom Brady, and Kelly Clarkson.
Following the Coca-Cola acquisition, Oza served as global Chief Marketing Officer for Vitaminwater and Smartwater until 2009. The Glacéau deal also resulted in a substantial personal financial gain for Oza.
Independent ventures and CAVU (2009-present)
After departing Coca-Cola in 2009, Oza transitioned to independent entrepreneurship. He founded Idea Merchants Capital as a platform for investing in and scaling innovative consumer brands.
In 2015, Oza co-founded CAVU Venture Partners with Clayton Christopher and Brett Thomas. The consumer-focused investment firm, founded by operators to partner with operators, quickly became one of the fastest-growing venture funds in the CPG space, raising over $156 million for their first fund and $210 million for their second fund.
CAVU's portfolio has included successful investments in:
- Bai Brands: Oza partnered with Justin Timberlake as an early investor, helping persuade Dr Pepper Snapple Group to acquire the company for $1.7 billion in 2017
- Vita Coco: Partnered with Madonna
- WTRMLN WTR: Partnered with Beyoncé
- Popchips: Partnered with Bruno Mars
- Chef's Cut Real Jerky: Partnered with Olivia Munn
- Bulletproof Coffee
Shark Tank
In 2017, Oza began appearing as a guest "Shark" investor on season 9 of ABC's Shark Tank, appearing alongside the regular investor panel. He continued as a guest Shark for seasons 10 and 11, departing in 2020. He reportedly earned $50,000 per episode.
Oza's most successful Shark Tank investment proved to be Poppi (originally called "Mother Beverage"), a prebiotic soda company. Oza invested $400,000 for a 25% equity stake in the company. On March 17, 2025, PepsiCo announced its acquisition of Poppi for $1.95 billion, making it one of the most lucrative investments in Shark Tank history.
Other Shark Tank investments include Knife Aid and Qball.
Business philosophy
Oza's approach to marketing and investment emphasizes several key principles:
- Celebrity equity partnerships: Rather than paying flat endorsement fees, giving celebrities ownership stakes aligns their interests with the brand's long-term success
- Authenticity over exposure: Seeking celebrities who genuinely connect with products rather than those with the largest followings
- Category disruption: Investing in brands that challenge established categories with innovative products
- Operator-led investment: At CAVU, prioritizing partnerships with experienced founders and operators
His celebrity branding strategies have fundamentally changed how companies approach endorsement deals, shifting from transactional relationships to true partnerships.
Philanthropy
Oza serves as an advisor to Impact Network, a non-profit organization dedicated to bringing quality education to rural Zambia. His personal connection to Zambia, where he was born, has made this cause particularly meaningful to him.
Personal life
Oza was previously married to Gyar Oza, with whom he has four children. The couple has divorced.
He divides his time between Beverly Hills, California, and The Hamptons, New York. Oza is known for hosting lavish parties featuring both Western and Bollywood-style entertainment, reflecting his multicultural background.
In 2019, Oza confirmed that he had ended a long-term relationship. He maintains a relatively private personal life despite his public business profile.
Oza's real estate investments have included a mansion purchased for $12.5 million, which he sold for $21 million in September 2024.
Net worth
As of 2024, Oza's estimated net worth ranges from $200 million to $400 million, according to various sources. His wealth derives from his equity stake in the Glacéau sale to Coca-Cola, his investments through CAVU Venture Partners, his stake in Bai Brands when it was acquired by Dr Pepper Snapple Group, his Shark Tank investments including Poppi, and real estate holdings.
