Wang Chuanfu (

pinyin: Wáng Chuánfú; born April 8, 1966) is a Chinese billionaire entrepreneur, chemist, and business executive who is the founder, chairman, and chief executive officer of BYD Company, the world's largest manufacturer of plug-in electric vehicles and rechargeable batteries.[1] Under Wang's leadership, BYD has grown from a small battery workshop founded in 1995 into a global powerhouse that surpassed Tesla in 2023 to become the world's top-selling electric vehicle manufacturer.

Wang's remarkable journey from an orphaned farm boy in rural Anhui to one of China's wealthiest and most influential industrialists represents a quintessential rags-to-riches story.[2] He founded BYD at age 29 with just 250,000 yuan ($30,000) borrowed from his cousin, starting as a battery manufacturer for mobile phones before boldly entering the automotive industry in 2003.[3]

Charlie Munger, Warren Buffett's longtime business partner at Berkshire Hathaway, famously called Wang "a combination of Thomas Edison and Jack Welch - something like Edison in solving technical problems, and something like Welch in getting done what he needs to do."[4] Berkshire Hathaway's 2008 investment of $230 million for a 9.89% stake in BYD, largely driven by Munger's conviction, has returned over $2.5 billion.[5]

As of February 2025, Wang's net worth stands at approximately $20.8 billion, making him one of China's wealthiest individuals.[6] In 2024, he was named to the TIME100 Climate list for his contributions to combating climate change through electric vehicle adoption.[7]

Early life and education

Wang Chuanfu was born on April 8, 1966, in Wuwei County, a rural area in Anhui Province, central China.[8] He was the youngest of eight children in an impoverished farming family. Tragedy struck early when both his parents died while he was still a teenager. Orphaned during his high school years, Wang was taken in and raised by his elder brother and sister-in-law.

Wang's academic excellence earned him admission to Central South Industrial University (now Central South University) in Changsha, Hunan Province.[9] He enrolled in 1983 to study metallurgical physical chemistry and earned his Bachelor of Science degree in 1987.

After graduating, Wang continued his education at the Beijing General Research Institute of Nonferrous Metals, where he pursued a Master's degree in Materials Science, focusing on battery chemistry and energy storage technologies.[10] He completed his Master's degree in 1990.

Career

Founding BYD (1995)

In 1995, at age 29, Wang took the entrepreneurial leap. He borrowed 250,000 yuan (approximately $30,000) from his cousin Lu Xiangyang and founded Build Your Dreams (BYD) in a rented workshop in Shenzhen, Guangdong Province.[11]

BYD's early days were humble. Wang and a small team assembled batteries by hand, focusing initially on nickel-cadmium batteries for consumer electronics. By 2002, BYD had become the world's second-largest manufacturer of rechargeable batteries for mobile phones, winning business with Nokia, Motorola, and Samsung.[12]

In July 2002, BYD Company completed its initial public offering on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange.[13]

Entry into automobiles (2003)

In January 2003, Wang made a decision that shocked investors: BYD would enter the automotive industry by acquiring Tsinchuan Automobile Company.[14] Wang believed batteries would eventually power automobiles, and if BYD could apply its battery expertise to vehicles, it could gain first-mover advantage in the coming electric vehicle revolution.

The BYD F3, launched in 2005, became hugely popular in China due to aggressive pricing and sold over 100,000 units in its first year.[15]

Warren Buffett investment (2008)

In September 2008, Berkshire Hathaway purchased 225 million shares of BYD for $230 million, acquiring a 9.89% stake.[16] The investment was driven by Charlie Munger after visiting BYD's facilities and meeting Wang.

Electric vehicle breakthrough

BYD launched numerous electric vehicle models, benefiting from Chinese government subsidies and favorable regulations. In March 2020, BYD unveiled its Blade Battery, using lithium iron phosphate (LFP) chemistry in an innovative cell-to-pack design that improved safety and reduced costs.[17]

In 2023, BYD sold 3.02 million new energy vehicles, surpassing Tesla to become the world's largest EV manufacturer.[18]

Personal life

Wang Chuanfu is extremely private about his personal life. He is known to be married, though his spouse's name is not publicly disclosed. Wang has occasionally mentioned his siblings - particularly his elder brother and sister-in-law who raised him - as the most important people in his life.

Despite his immense wealth, Wang is known for a relatively modest lifestyle. He reportedly drives BYD vehicles exclusively and rarely attends high-society events.[19]
